What is it like to live in Nouakchott? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Nouakchott is the capital of Mauritania, my home country. It is a third world nation. Still in a demographic transition. It’s a cultural place, people’s still Hold to theirs traditions. It is somewhat a part of the Sahara so it’s very hot in there and there is sand in the street. I can recommend it to a tourist but mainly it is the other cities in the country that really attract the eye and provide a unique live style and experience. Nouakchott hold most of the country population around 2 millions lives there.

What is the student lifestyle like in Nouakchott?

Student life is just like every other place. Peoples speaks Arabic and French. You’ll take a taxi to move around, it’s not that expensive. Making friends is not that hard, in fact peoples there are very curious by nature. They will approach you and befriend you quickly. There is a new university that just opened last year in Nouakchott.

How much does it cost to live in Nouakchott?

Living in Nouakchott isn’t that expensive compared with other places. Although the majority of population is suffering from low incoms.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Nouakchott? Is there any advice you can give?

As far as rent goes I don’t think it is that difficult to find a place to stay if you have the money. My advice is to choose the neighbor you will live in wisely. There at rich and poor neighbor, and some are not too safe.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Nouakchott has a variety of dishes, Rice and fish is my favorite the way they prepare it is unique. But you can also find kous-kous and some traditional dishes.

What places would you recommend visiting in Nouakchott?

I would recommend the beach

Is it good to eat out in Nouakchott? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Peoples in Nouakchott don’t visit restaurant that often, I mean in all my years there I’ve never been to one. You can always find a maid that can cook for you, for a reasonable price per month. Also it’s a very cooperative society. You’ll never go hungry in there. Once you get to know People, they will constantly insist that you eat with them.

Is the nightlife good in Nouakchott? Where is good to go?

In Nouakchott peoples don’t like going out in the night. But you will always find parties, weddings and stuff like that if you asked around. I would not recommend Taking a walk around in the night because the streets will be empty and getting lost will be bad.

What advice would you give future students heading to Nouakchott?

My advise is to just enjoy yourself. Peoples there are curious and somewhat noesy by nature. But once you get to know theme you’ll adapt quickly, and make a lot of friends in no time.
