I received my undergraduate degree from Christopher Newport University and therefore spent 4 years in the city of Newport News. Obviously my experience was defined by my university and it's interaction with the city. I recommend the city only if you are going to CNU, if not, I would not spend too much time there.

The stereotypical "American" food that you would find in most US cities is here. I wouldn't call Newport News a gastronomical wonderland but if you are in the mood to eat out there are enough options to satisfy your need.

It's about the people you surround yourself with that will make the location fun, or not fun, I suppose that is applies everywhere. However, if I was only in Newport News for a brief time I would visit the VA Living Museum, the Lions Gate bridge, the Noland Trail (on a nice day), and CNU campus.
