Experience in New Orleans, United States by Monica
What is it like to live in New Orleans? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The french quater is a blast, but so are all the other parts of the city. Don't stay only in Uptown; go explore! Lots of partying; you have the ability to go out every night of the week. Super humid and hot (AC is a must).
What is the student lifestyle like in New Orleans?
Very fun and lots of partying. Lots of things to do and never a dull moment. All the universities within New Orleans are difficult so don't forget to study. It is easy to forget with everything there is to do. Try to explore outside the uptown bubble; the entire city has amazing things to do from the French Quarter to The Marigny and Bywater.
How much does it cost to live in New Orleans?
Very cheap to live in New Orleans. Cheap transportation using the street car. One of which runs down St. Charles to the French Quarter from Loyola and Tulane. Cheap and expensive eats (use Yelp to find places).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in New Orleans? Is there any advice you can give?
Difficult during the Spring semester (As most students go abroad in the fall so they do not miss Mardi Gras). If coming in the fall semester, not difficult at all.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
GUMBO, red beans and rice, crawfish boils, Oysters (Raw and Charbroiled). Please try creole food its amazing and don't be afraid of alligator (it tastes like chicken). If not from america, try our mac and cheese at Superior.
What places would you recommend visiting in New Orleans?
The music box, Ace hotel pool (free on weekdays and have to spend 20 on food and drinks on weekends),
Is it good to eat out in New Orleans? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Superior seafood happy hour (4:30-6:30 every day); La maison (mexican); milk bar (sandwhiches); Seaworthy (Downtown next to Ace); Chicken and Watermelon (Best Wings in NOLA)
If you can get in (reservations fill up months in advance, but its not super exensive, fun and def worth it) go to the Drag Brunch at the Country Club
Is the nightlife good in New Orleans? Where is good to go?
If you are a student the boot (happy hour).
Uptown: The boot, Snake and Jakes (only after 1 AM)
Go to frenchman street and visit any of the bars and clubs, 30/90 ect. (bourbon is just for tourists, so go once but don't think thats the best place in the quarter because its a little gross)
GO TO LAFITTE's Blacksmith shop bar and get the purple daq
in the CBD- Monkey board is a fun rooftop bar (no cover)
What advice would you give future students heading to New Orleans?
Be safe. Always take an uber instead of walk alone after 12AM. Don't pee on the streets during mardi gra unless you want to get arrested.
