How do I find a room in The Netherlands?

One of the trickiest things of going to study abroad is finding a place to stay. It is not easy to find a room in another country. Especially if you’re not there. Even if you’re there, it can be daunting due to possible language barriers! I have received some questions about how to find a room in The Netherlands so I decided to write a post about finding a room in The Netherlands. First I’ll tell you a bit more about how it works here. I must say that it can be a bit difficult to find a nice room soon, usually it is a matter of being lucky. Finding a room in our beautiful capital Amsterdam is probably also the most difficult and very expensive.

What I personally often use is Facebook groups. Just search a city and then something like accommodation or (Erasmus) housing. The Dutch word for housing is “kamer” or “studentenwoning”.

Then you can obviously make use of this website. Just open the accommodation section and search for the city.

You can also use some of the following websites: Studentenkamers, Kamertje, Rooming and Kamer.

These also for longer term stay: Funda and Pararius.

Personally I found my room in The Hague from a housing agency of the website Pararius (mentioned above). If you’re staying here for a longer time this is only useful.

Don’t forget to use your own network. If you or a friend of yours knows someone in the city you’re going to study always let them know you’re looking for a room. Just post about it.
