My Erasmus Experience in Murcia, Spain. By Guilherme
Why did you choose to go to Murcia, Spain?
Because of my university professor's influence. He already knew Murcia and recommended going on an exchange to study at the University of Murcia.
How long does the grant last? How much money do you get for help?
I went without a grant, the only help I got was exemption from taxes on the university course.
What's the student environment like in Murcia?
Murcia is a city with many students, because there are two big universities there: UMU and UCAM. Therefore, from Tuesday night, there are always options for going out at night.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Murcia to other students?
Yes. The city itself isn't very touristy, but wins over everyone who lives there. The best thing is that it's a big city and, at the same time, small. That's to say, it's big in the sense of the infrastructure of the companies, bars, restaurants and small in the sense that people live very close to each other, which is good for meeting up.
How's the country's food?
Very good. The tapas, the paella, the tortilla, all in all, Spanish food enchants me.
How easily did you find accommodation in Murcia?
Very easily, since I knew someone who lived there and she helped me to find a place to live.
On average, how much did you spend living in Murcia?
Around 650 euros, including rent, water bills, light, internet, food, transport, telephone and leisure.
What's the language like? Did you attend a language course at the university?
For me it was chilled because I already had some knowledge of Spanish before getting there, and also because my language (Portuguese) is very similar to Spanish.
What is the cheapest way to get to Murcia from your city?
From my city (São Paulo), the only way is by plane. But I would recommend going by plane to the Alicante Airport, a city which is under an hour away, and there is a bus that goes from this airport directly to the city of Murcia.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Murcia?
- Badulake (on the Erasmus street)
- Musik
- Boutique
- Theatre
And eating out in Murcia? Can you name your favourite places?
Las Tascas, there are loads of bars that sell excellent and reasonably-priced tapas there.
And in terms of cultural visits?
There's the Cathedral of Murcia, the Christ of Monteagudo, the Sanctuary of Fuensanta, the city of Caravaca de la Cruz, Lorca.
Do you have any advice you'd like to give future students in Murcia?
The spring-time parties in Murcia are unmissable, principally the Bando de la Huerta and the Entierro de la Sardina.
