Murcia, the land of "acho"! Susan's Experience
What do you think about living in Murcia? Would you recommend it?
Murcia is a good city to live in as there's always something to do. It has many amenities and the atmosphere is great. People are friendly and there's loads of university students.
How is the student environment in Murcia?
It's good, it seems like a student-led city to me.
How much does it cost to live in Murcia?
Around 200 euros. I live in a three storey house with a garden by Espinardo campus, and it costs be 170 euros, not including electricity, water, and gas.
The flats in the centre of Murcia cost around 200 euros, too, but they're all flats.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Murcia? Do you have any advice?
Well, it was a little difficult for my friends and I, but because we started looking so early. It's best to start looking in around June, which is when people start leaving, and when houses start becoming available to rent. If you look around that time, then it's easier to find accommodation.
How's Spain's food? What are your favourite dishes?
Spanish food is the best there is, and in Murcia the food's soooo good. You can't go to Murcia without having a jug of beer and a "marinera"! Other typical Murcian food that I love is the "pastelico de carne" (a tiny meat pastie), "zaragollo", the Murcian salad.
Another thing you have to try, though admittedly, is something I don't like as it has a lot of sugar, is a "paparajote". You have to try it, without a doubt, at Murcia's festival!
What places do you recommend visiting in Murcia?
I recommend you visit Cathedral Square, the Plaza de las Flores, the Merced, the entire river area, shopping on the Gran Vía, Santo Domingo Plaza...
And to eat in Murcia? Can you list your favourite places?
Some good places to go is the bar "La Tapa y el Madre de Dios", which serve tapas, and some very good and sophisticated meals at great prices.
If you're going with friends and don't wanna spend too much money, in Santo Domingo square there's a couple of Montaditos, the pizzerias Góndola and Imperial, and the bars El Chapas, La Bernarda and Los Zagales, are all very cheap.
What places do you recommend to go to on a night out in Murcia?
To go out, you have to go to las Tascas. They're all pubs and clubs which are always busy. Thursdays are for university students, and Saturdays and Sundays have great a great environment for those over 21.
Las Tascas close at 4am, so if you want to continue partying until the first Tram of the day, there's clubs like Luminata Disco in the Tascas area, and bigger clubs by the Atalayas area, like the Teatre or Lío. There's always organised parties there.
Do you have any advice for future students in Murcia?
Murcia is a cool student to live in as a student, and it's not a bore like many say! It has surprised me loafs and I'm very happy living here, so I would recommend it to you all!
