Erasmus Experience in Murcia, Spain
Why did you choose to go to Murcia, Spain?
I did not have a choice. Since my school only had an agreement with Murcia, it was mandatory to go there. Because, as you know, Murcia is a small city in the south of Spain, the people only speak the local language, which is Spanish. Those who want to learn Spanish in this way will learn very quickly and it's a good city for those looking to improve.
How long was your scholarship? How much money did you receive to help you pay for your expenses?
My scholarship was 9 months I got a total of €3850, but I only ended up receiving 80% of the €3200, as this was enough for me to live off for 5 months. My family supported me for the remaining 4 months.
How is student life in Murcia?
It's a small city and a student city full of students. It's a true student city. Bars are best at night.
Would you recommend the city of Murcia and its universities to other students?
I would recommend the city, but I would prefer a university where languages other than Spanish are spoken. As here the only language is Spanish. You'll be disappointed if you're expecting it to be in English...
How about food?
Typical Mediterranean meals cooked in the Spanish style.
Was it hard to find accommodation?
The University has a site called Vimur page. If you receive your letter of acceptance letter by e-mail, it is stated that you can find accommodation on there. From there you can see the prices of the houses suitable for you, you can inform the page coordinators after you have decided which is best for you. But you rent a room, not the whole house.
How are accommodation prices? How's the cost of living in general?
Accommodation is from 150-300 €. Other living expenses are about 300-400 € per month (travel, food, house expenses etc).
Was the language easy to handle? Were there language courses at the university?
The university offers a 10-day Spanish course to Erasmus students for the first week of September and the first week of February. Certainly must be taken seriously. I would recommend that you go to a Spanish language course in your own country before someone who is not Spanish.
What is the easiest and cheapest way to get from your city to the city of Murcia?
I would prefer to go by plane from my city to Alicante and then a bus from Alicante to Murcia. Murcia buses stop right in front of Alicante airport. You pay then and there, you do not need to buy a ticket in advance, and it was about 5 euros last time. The journey lasts 45 minutes. Valencia is one of the next nearby cities - 3 hours from Murcia. In addition to this, there's Madrid and Barcelona. Buses take hours to reach these cities, you can see prices and buy tickets from the ALSA page.
Where do you recommend for a night out in Murcia?
Murcia is small, so everything is close together. Cafes, bars are often busy. Badulake bar is the Erasmus bar.
Which restaurants in Murcia do you recommend?
Turco Döner :)
What cultural places do you need to see?
The cathedral and the museums.
Do you have any advice for students coming to the city of Murcia in the future?
University education is really challenging. An extension of school is preferable. It's not just Murcia, it's the same in all the Spanish universities.
