Cinemas in Murcia

It's ironic, but Murcia is the city with the most cinemas that I know, but also the city where I miss films the most.

Let me explain...

There are six cinemas in Murcia but all six show the same kind of films, so in other words, they don't have auteur cinema (with maybe the exception of the filmoteca). There's Rex (next to las Tascas and Plaza de Europa), the centrofama (Calle Puerta Nueva, in the city centre, next to Gran Via and the university), the filmoteca (in the centre, behind the cathedral), ZigZag (outside of the historic centre, after Plaza Circular on Avenida Juan Carlos Primero) and finally the two in the Murcian shopping centres: neocine (in Thader) and the one in the Nueva Condomina shopping centre. These two final cinemas are far away from the centre, you have to go there via tram, bus or car.

1) Rex Cinema: located next to Plaza de Europa. There is only one large room. It is a very old and pretty cinema, with a large balcony in front of the screen. There is only one room. The films that they show are the same as in the other cinemas in the city (except for the filmoteca cinema). They are, mostly, the new box-office releases (particularly American films or action movies). The tickets cost more or less 7 euros at the weekend.

2) The centrofama cinema: located in Calle Puerta Nueva. This is the street to the left on the university when you are in front of the main entrance. It is located in between the two clubs "La Boutique" and "Iluminata". The cinema is normal inside, in terms of decor. The rooms are an average size, there are two rooms. In reality, there are three but the third one hasn't been open for a while. The films that are shown are from the box-office but not the top ones. Often, there is one action film and another more romantic or drama-based film. Sometimes, they show Spanish films that have received awards (such as those by Almodovar). The tickets cost more or less 7 euros.

3) La filmoteca: is a subsidised cinema. It is more of a projection centre than a cinema. It shows old films from the '50s and '60s, and sometimes more recent films, from a year or two ago, which have received prizes from famous festivals. It is cool because it's a change from the American films. It is very cheap as it only costs 2. 50 euros for a ticket! It is also possible to get a subscription and go for even cheaper. It's a shame that the most recent films aren't shown more often (it's only one shown more or less every two weeks).

4) Zigzag cinema: this cinema has a lot of rooms but as it doesn't get as many customers, they usually only open three rooms. The films shown are mainly American ones, action films or sometimes Spanish films but almost never auteur films. The tickets cost more or less 6 euros for students and 7. 50 euros for non-students. It is situated on avenida Juan Carlos 1.

5) The cinemas in the shopping centres, Thader and in the Nueva Condomina : these two cinemas are located nearby to each other. To get there, you have to take the tram, or just go by car. These two cinemas are harder to get to than the other because in the evening, there are not buses or trams running after midnight. Therefore, you have to be careful and check how long the film lasts, and don't go there without having a way to get back to the city (you could always hitch-hike but well... ). Also, the bus times aren't always very clear and sometimes aren't correct. The films shown are, often, the same ones as shown in the centre but there could be more rooms open. The rooms are modern and medium-sized.
