Experience in Moscow, Russian Fereration by Sergei
What is it like to live in Moscow? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Moscow is a Russian capital. So it is similar to most capitals: rush city. It is rather expensive, but surely there are a lot of opportunities: parties, sightseeing different events, theatres etc., etc..
What is the student lifestyle like in Moscow?
Keep in touch with your classmates, with other local people you know; their advice will be quite valuable for you. It is possible to reach everything in Moscow, but you need some inside information.
How much does it cost to live in Moscow?
It depends from your lifestyle. Minimum accommodation for locals is about 350 EUR for 1 bedroom apartment. Another 350 EUR you need for meal, and from 100 EUR for entertainment. Actually it is possible to spend less (dormitory is usually cheaper etc. ), but it won't be easy.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Moscow? Is there any advice you can give?
There are a lot of universities in Moscow. Look for a convenient location and easy route to the university. Transport is cheap, but city is huge. If your one way route to the university takes less than an hour, it's OK.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is normal, not spicy, might be a bit fat, but it's OK for cold winter.
What places would you recommend visiting in Moscow?
I would recommend to go outside from Moscow: to do excursions to Golden Ring places or visit that towns independently, one by one. For Moscow sightseeing I think it will be much more interesting with a company. I think you can find out here anything you look for.
Is it good to eat out in Moscow? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Some places are definitely good here, but expensive. Accenti- highly expensive restaurant with delicious food and good service. A bit cheaper restaurant Boris Godunov, next to Red Square. Set of tourists stereotypes: borsch, vodka, balalaika and some others. The food is good also. Cheap cafe to have a launch: networks cafe: Mu-my and Grabli. It is better than fast-food, but just OK.
Is the nightlife good in Moscow? Where is good to go?
There are number of clubs. Choose those that your friends like.
What advice would you give future students heading to Moscow?
If you going spend winter in Moscow, be prepared it could be very up to -25 Celsius degrees for a week or too. Normally it is from -5 to -10 for two months. Summer is good time here. But if you are going to spend the summer in Russia I recommend you to leave Moscow and visit some other interesting places.
