Experience in Moscow, Russian Federation by Romario

What is it like to live in Moscou? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city has changed dramatically in recent decades. Once the center of Communist power, it has become an amazing international metropolis. Although you don’t need to be a billionaire to be able to afford living in Moscow, it certainly doesn't come cheap. Moscow has made the top four of the world’s most expensive expatriate cities for ten years. Housing, schooling and medical costs make up the largest chunk of the expat budget. The costs will depend on the part of the city you live in and the stores you go to.

What I like in Moscow is that each person can work here, of course, if he/she had desire to do so. You can't be unemployed! There are a lot of vacancies even for people who don't have education at all. The most precious workers are those who know foreign languages, especially English native speakers.

What is the student lifestyle like in Moscou?

Classroom culture of Russian universities is unique. Every professor, department and university is different - but Russia has some deep-rooted traditions. More so than not, students’ grades are based almost exclusively on the ‘final exams’ with less attention attached to perceived effort, attendance and homework. The exams require you to have knowledge of the entire curriculum and are quite demanding.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Moscou? Is there any advice you can give?

It is not a problem at all to find an accommodation in Moscow. From cheap one-room apartment downtown to very expensive studios in the center of city. There are plenty of offers in different web-sites, newspapers and even on the streets.

Is the nightlife good in Moscou? Where is good to go?

Moscow never sleeps! The nightlife is the best part of Moscow. Beautiful streets, lighted buildings, expensive cars and clubs full of young and attractive people!
