My Erasmus Experience in Milan, Italy, by Juliette

Why did you choose to go to Milan, Italy?

Milan is the heart of everything - it's what New York is to the USA. It's a cultural capital and also the place where everything happens. You'll find the latest trends in music, fashion and art, and also a large variety of things you can study. Discover the city, the beauty and organisation. The proximity to everything within the city itself and also to France is great.

How long did you stay in Milan? How much funding did you receive?

I stayed for 9 months and received 300€ a month.

What is student life like in Milan?

Perfect! The Italian students are always ready to help you with your studies, they are open and the Erasmus students formed a large group which meant that you were never bored and could go out every day.

Would you recommend the city and university of Milan to other students?

Without a doubt! I couldn't have chosen a better place than Milan.

What is the food like?

Too good, we all put on about 4kg! There is something called 'aperitivo' - you pay around 8€ and get a drink and an unlimited Italian buffet.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Milan?

Not really, I went to an agency - "For You Affiti" - which was fast and simple (I found somewhere in two days).

What is the cost of living like in Milan?

The same as France, but the markets are much cheaper! (You can find everything at the market on Via Papiniano) For books, head to Libraccio - a large second-hand bookshop.

How did you find learning the language? Did you take any courses organised by the university?

I learned Italian at school and had a very strict teacher. The language is very easy to learn and get used to because it is similar to French.

What is the cheapest way to get to Milan from where you live?

Easyjet offers a cheap, direct flight from Bordeaux.

Where you recommend going out in Milan?

It really depends what you're looking for, but everything happens in the south of the city. The night starts with an aperitivo near Navigli then you move on to a nightclub (but the nightclub depends on the person). There is the Old fashion, the Banque, the Volt, the Rocket... to name a few!

And for food? What are your favourite places?

Everyone agrees that La Padelaccia is the best pizzeria for quality/price - but you won't manage to eat the whole pizza!

What about cultural visits?

All the museums are fantastic and each one is unique. But Duomo isn't as nice. There are lots of small galleries showing work from the latest artists. You really have to stay up-to-date because there are lots of cultural festivals and events that are all great! It's also good to just walk around the city (and get lost) to discover the real Milan because the most beautiful things in the city are hidden.

Any advice for future students in Milan?

No, I don't have any, you just have to create your own experience.
