Experience in Milano, Italy, by Francesca
What is it like to live in Milano? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Milano is an amazing experience because there is no city like it. It's a big city but not so big that you can't discover every part of it. Milano can offer you the life of a European city and at the same time the Italian tradition. I recommend it to all the students that want to live a dynamic life and those who are open to new cultures and new friends.
What is the student lifestyle like in Milano?
The student lifestyle is different depending on which university you attend. Overall there are always things to do for students - starting from the numerous parties in the club, to museums, the student movement and the food experience. But I have to admit - The University of Milan is demanding; not impossible but very demanding.
How much does it cost to live in Milano?
Unfortunately this is the bad side of Milano. It's an expensive city, especially for the accommodation. But if you search just a little you can find the right accommodation. About the parties, there are many opportunities for students!
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Milano? Is there any advice you can give?
It is difficult to find accommodation if you want to pay less than 350 euros per month. I suggest to keep in contact with other students that are looking for accommodation and to rent the house or the room together. The city center is very expensive. You should look for a house near the city center, in neighbourhoods like Loreto, Piola, Porta Romana. In those places you are close enough to walk to the city center.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
In Milano you can find every kind of food you like and it's usually of good quality. I really like sushi (in Milan there are Japanese restaurants on every corner) but Italian food is always the best.
What places would you recommend visiting in Milano?
Milano is a city where you can see and visit everything and it will always be different. There is not a place I like more because if you walk just ten minutes you can pass from new technological places like Garibaldi, to the ancient ways of Brera. This is amazing!
Is it good to eat out in Milano? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
In Milan it is better to eat at home then eating out at a restaurant. But it's very cool to have aperitivo - in many places you spend 7 to 10 euro (it depends on the place) including one drink and as much food as you want. Sometimes it's not very good but generally it is delicious.
Is the nightlife good in Milano? Where is good to go?
In Milano you have something to do every night and you can stay up all night, every night! But sometimes you wake up and find your wallet empty in the morning without remembering how you did it, so be careful! You should try every club and then also the smallest bars. For example, there is an ancient church that has become a club. The drinks are served on the altar. It's a very interesting place if you're into architecture!
What advice would you give future students heading to Milano?
Living in Milano would be a great experience! Here you can meet people from all over the world and that could be enough but there are so many things to do that you will hardly ever stay at home.
