Experience in Milano, Italy by Federica
What is it like to live in Milan? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I find it difficult to give an opinion about it because Milano is my city, and I think that I would not be completely truthful because my point of view isn't objective.
Anyway I believe that is not bad, the nightlife is good, the food is also really good and, even though Italians' English is not so good, we (someone at least) try to help and integrate foreigners :)
The weather is not the best, but it depends on the period in which you will be here; more or less from April to September is warm (humid and hot in June-July-August, 27/35°C) and from October to March it's cooler (it may snow on December-February with 10/-3°C).
What is the student lifestyle like in Milan?
It's nice, I am attending the Bicocca University and the courses are many and diversified, the amount of work is big but adequate and the University is really beautiful and youthful.
How much does it cost to live in Milan?
Milano is a very expensive city, the food/apartments/drinks/transport prices are high. A drink may cost from 5€ to 15€ and also, a sandwich costs more or less 5€ and the tickets for the subway/bus cost a minimum of 1. 50€.
I suggest, if possible, to buy groceries and cook at home and do a monthly pass that allows you to take the public transports paying less.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Milan? Is there any advice you can give?
Actually I was born in Milan, so I don't know.
But I suggest to look for a shared apartment in the suburbs or anywhere not in the center of Milan, due to the expensive costs.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Speaking as an Italian, I think that the food is amazing! You can find a lot of lovely and characteristic restaurants.
You have to try the "Risotto alla Milanese" and the "Risotto all'osso buco" that are really good, or maybe try a simple pizza (you won't find pineapple on it sorry ahah) even better if it's made by neapolitans!
What places would you recommend visiting in Milan?
Well there are a lot of places to visit: Duomo, Castello Sforzesco, Museo del '900, Brera, Navigli, Porta Romana and so on!
And of course via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Torino if you want to shopping; )
Is it good to eat out in Milan? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
As I wrote before, absolutely yes!
I don't really have a favourite spot, but you will certainly find something nice in Navigli :)
Is the nightlife good in Milan? Where is good to go?
Yes, if you're looking for a pub you can go to Navigli or Porta Romana, if you want a disco you got Alcatraz, The Beach Club, Old Fashion and a lot of other places.
What advice would you give future students heading to Milan?
Just relax and come here, you can take the opportunity to travel all over Italy and fall in love with it :)
