Erasmus Experience in Milano, Italy by Fernando
Why did you choose to go to Milán, Italia?
The language is a good factor and also the university that is very well ranked internationally.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I didn't get any scholarship, I borrowed some money and work 20 hours per week to sustain myself.
What is the student lifestyle like in Milán?
It is pretty cool, specially if you are under 27 because then you will get a lot of discounts.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Milán to other students?
Indeed, the city is far better than I expected as well as the university. The environment is very lively and the transportation system is very good.
What is the food like?
Well it is expensive to eat outside but when you do, you don't regret, it is delicious.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Milán?
Yeah, finding a nice place for an affordable price inside the city is time consuming and you will have to hop a loot of hoops before you find a good spot, it is doable but very difficult. The best and easiest way is to live in the outskirts, its cheaper.
How much does it cost to live in Milán?
Depends, by renting a room, paying transportation without benefits and cooking by yourself about 700EUR.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The Italian is easy if you have the basis, like if you come from a country with a mother tongue from the romantic Latin languages like french, Spanish or Portuguese... if not it might be a bit challenging if you compare it with english, but if you compare it with Russian or German, is not that bad. Finally, yes the university offers free courses of Italian for the students.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Milán from your city?
Plane, there is no other way as a matter of fact.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Milán?
The greatest and most upbeat sector is Navigli, is where all the best bars, discos and restaurants are located.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Milán?
Navigli or near the city center, around the Castello.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Museums, expositions that are not permanent so they come and go, concerts and theater, this guys love musicals.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Milán in the future?
Milan is a nice city, expensive, but when you compare it with other cities inside Italy because when you do the comparison between Milan and Paris or Oslo, it is VERY cheap. Finding a job is nearly impossible without the language so the best advise is brush up your Italian even if your classes are in English, it will make your life SOOO much easier.
