Erasmus Experience in Milan, Italy by Joddy
Why did you choose to go to Milan, Italy?
It's a beautiful city with beautiful people. It's inspiring for me to study design. The mix of business and relaxed way of life here in Milan is amazing!
What is the student lifestyle like in Milan?
Deep thinker, yet relaxed.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Milan to other students?
Yes, indeed!
What is the food like?
Lots of carbs! But will never get you fat (hopefully).
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Milan?
Yes, it's a bit frustrating to find accomodation here, I think it's the same as everywhere.
How much does it cost to live in Milan?
You can live with 650 include everything if you're discipline to manage your finance. I spend about 700 per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Italian is not an easy language. But I can manage to live and run errands with lack of knowledge in Italian, just remember, they use gestures as one of the way they communicate, you can use it too. Yes, there are courses available at university. If not, you can take courses in Commune.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Milan from your city?
From my hometown, Jakarta, Indonesia? It is not economical at all! I flew here by plane, what else I could take. Yet you can find a promo/discounted flights if you're lucky.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Milan?
Just go for aperitivo, I guess. I tried to go to clubs once or twice, I don't like them, it seemed that italian(or milanese, especially) taste of music doesn't meet mine. But I heard that Dude club is among the best place to go on night out, I've never been there tho. And sometime, hanging out at friends' place is the best option.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Milan?
I rarely eating out for italian cuisine, cause I have italian flatmates who can cook! But, I usually go out for asian food, in Brera, there is this small place called Macha Cafe, they have a very delicate sushi bowl/poke bowl and wonderful sushi burger. For chinese food, I'd recommend a cheaper Jubin in chinatown, Wang Jiao, Fontanelle in Romolo for cheap food but good, and this asian fusion restaurant called Dou. And the kebab place near the Castello M1 is the best in my opinion.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Plenty. I usually go to BASE for some cultural events in Milan.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Milan in the future?
You will really enjoy your life here. You will explore this city, you will fall in love.
