Coral Castle: Scientific Marvel

Published by flag-us Monica Szynaka — 6 years ago

Coral Castle was an interesting place to visit considering it is famously known for it's many appearances on different "alien" programs. The entire premise has multiple statues and "rooms" made of, you may have already guessed, coral. This area is located in Homestead and it is really easy to find your way there using a GPS. It was created by a Latvian American who fell in love and to exhibit his enormous love, he built the make shift home for him and his possible future wife and children, supposedly. As you walk around the perimeter, you will marvel at the beautifully cut statues of moons and stars.

There are multiple rooms made of coral. There is a kitchen and a full shed with hung up tools. There is a child's room where a cradle for their future baby with a built in corner that is said to be made for the purpose of time out. There are two beds carved out for him and his lover which do not look too comfortable.

There is furniture all laid out throughout the area, one table which is the shape of a heart. The man even created a fire pit to cook food on. The area is really laid out for a family to live there however, if one truly thinks about it, while seemingly romantic with a persistant man behind the project, it was equally mildly creepy due to the fact that he worked on this but, from what I remember never got married and never had children. If you love coral, this is most certainly the place to go but, be careful when touching the coral because it is still very sharp and also breaks off easily due to its age.

The place is remarkable due to the fact that the man did all of it on his own. It was featured on many shows because scientists and architects could not figure out how he did it. He created walls around the area so that no one could see what he was doing. He was not an owner of any heavy machinery. No one understood how he got the coral there either. Some say they saw large trucks unloaded the coral in the spot at night time but, no one could verify it. You will notice that there are not many homes around the area, it is really in the middle of no where. The man worked alone on it for 28 years while making sure no one would see his work of art until it was completely finished. Some young people who peeked through the cracks claimed to have seen him lifting the 1 Ton pieces of coral as if it was the weight of feather. Scientists believe that he some how manipulated the Earth's magnetic pull to allow himself to move the pieces without a problem. Other claim it was alien technology.

In the picture above, the tour guide informed us that the peak was built in such a way that it aligned with the North Star or the star in the fountain (I remember that it was tied into some astrological achievement without any modern technology). Regardless, all the buildings and carved out furniture are truly incredible to look at if you believe that only one man did it. There are many other things to see such as the fountain as well as some structure where you can move the piece of coral easily. I also believe that we were told that behind the building the man planed for there to be a zoo for his future children. I was mildly upset to see that the area was much smaller than I had thought but, everything there has a story to it (so it is really fascinating). Also I believe it is well worth going on the guided tour. The price is $15 for students but, if you go on a site called Groupon sometimes they offer deals for the place and I think year round you can find 20% for most attractions in Miami. I recommend this place for either a nice date, historical viewing, or if you are interested in astronomical achievements or simply like coral. Enjoy!
