Experience in Melbourne, Australia by Jarrod
What is it like to live in Melbourne? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Melbourne is a city that offers something for everyone! It is home to people from many different cultural backgrounds, beautiful parks, beaches, a wonderful café scene and brilliant coffee, breweries, a unique bar scene, weekend farmers markets, and some of the best music Australia has to offer. The bar scene gives opportunity to up and coming artists to perform. You will find something unique in each suburb. Melbournians take pride in their city and are generally most helpful if you need anything. Just ask.
What is the student lifestyle like in Melbourne?
From my experience at the University of Melbourne student life is great! You are just a 5-minute tram ride to the heart of the city. The University itself has both modern and beautiful historical architecture, great facilities and beautiful grounds. Deakin, Monash, La Trobe, Victoria, ACU and RMIT are the other Universities in and around the city.
How much does it cost to live in Melbourne?
Rental apartments are relatively cheap depending where you want to live. For $300-400 au per month you can live in a shared house with a garden just 10-15 minutes tram or train ride to the city in Brunswick. Apartments in the suburbs around the city will generally start at $400. If you are shopping at The Victoria (or a similar) markets you can shop and eat cheap. Accommodation, transport and food are all relative to Europe. Alcohol and tobacco you will find are considerably more expensive.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Melbourne? Is there any advice you can give?
No, not particularly. If you have friends who you want to live with, get all your papers in order and visit the real estate agents of the suburbs you want to live in for their rental listings. Go to the Open For Inspection of the house or apartment you want to rent and have your papers (and a short biography about each of you can help) ready to hand to the estate agent. For singles, go to Gumtree or check university notice boards for spare rooms to share.
