Places to eat in Mannheim, Germany

Here are a few of my favourite places to eat in Mannheim!

OhJulia

  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Location: Q6, 6
  • Price: ££

OhJulia is a really lovely Italian restaurant at the Q6-Q7 shopping centre. It has outside seating, and a nice interior with a bar. It's perfect for during the day or an evening meal, and offers all the classic Italian dishes. You have to go and order inside, and collect your drinks separately from the bar, but the food is brought out to your table.

Grimminger

  • Cuisine: Bakery
  • Location: Multiple, throughout the city
  • Price: £

Grimminger is a bakery chain in Mannheim, which serves hot drinks, pastries and sandwiches throughout the day. Many have outside seating areas, but I prefer to pop into a Grimminger to grab a drink and some breakfast on the way to uni, for example.

Coa

  • Cuisine: Asian
  • Location: Friedrichsring 4
  • Price: ££

Coa is a really nice Asian restaurant not too far from the Water Tower. It has a variety of Thai, Chinese and Japanese food. They have an English version of the menu, and several good options for vegetarians too. The portion sizes are pretty generous, but they're more than happy to put any leftovers in a takeaway box for you!

Cafe Sammo

  • Cuisine: Cafe
  • Location: B1, 6 and A3, 7
  • Price: ££

Sammo does pretty good coffee, along with a variety of other hot drinks, iced drinks, smoothies etc. It also does muffins, cakes, salads and sandwiches so is a good place to grab some brunch or lunch. Both cafes have outside seating, but the one at A3 has a much larger area and isn't on a main road so it's a bit more pleasant.

L3 Cafe

  • Cuisine: Cafe
  • Location: L3, 9
  • Price: £

L3 Cafe is not far from the uni and is a little bit cheaper than Sammo, for example. It does hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and cakes etc although the range is a bit more limited. The uni offers discounts for L3 in the first couple of weeks of uni, and it's also the location of Stammtisch every Monday night; it turns into a really nice bar with cheap cocktails, and beer and wine, and students (particularly international ones) can just go and hang out for a bit and have a few drinks.

Cafe EO

  • Cuisine: Cafe and canteen
  • Location: Ehrenhof, University
  • Price: £

This is the university's cafe, and is a great place to get really cheap, decent food (even cheaper with a student card, as you get a discount! ). It has outside seating in the castle courtyard, as well as plenty of seats inside if the weather isn't great. Not only does it do hot drinks, sandwiches, and muffins/cakes/pastries, but it also has a small canteen tucked away around the corner. Although this is smaller than the main canteen, the Mensa, and doesn't offer as many choices, I find the food here tends to be much nicer and of better quality.

Kombuse

  • Cuisine: Vegetarian/vegan
  • Location: Jungbuschstraße 23
  • Price: £

Kombuse is an amazing vegetarian and vegan restaurant in Jungbusch. It has a really nice atmosphere and is very popular at peak times. You can eat in or take-away, and it has a pretty extensive food and drinks menu. The food itself is cheap and very generous in terms of portion-size. It's all great ingredients and tastes amazing! Even non-vegetarians would be able to find something they like, I'm sure.

Eis Fontanella

  • Cuisine: Ice-cream
  • Location: O4, 5
  • Price: ££

Eis Fontanella is an amazing ice-cream cafe, which claims to be the inventor of Spaghetti-Eis (a must have if you're in Mannheim! ). It's vanilla ice-cream pressed into the shape of spaghetti, with strawberry sauce on top to look like tomato pasta sauce, and topped with white chocolate sprinkles to look like parmesan. It's a Mannheim specialty, and definitely worth a try. They also sell standard ice-creams, sundaes and the like, if you get bored of Spaghetti-Eis. It's quite expensive, but great if you fancy a treat.

Vapiano

  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Location: Friedrichsplatz 1
  • Price: ££

Vapiano is another great Italian restaurant. It does mostly pizza, pasta, salads but they're all cooked fresh and to order. You go up to the counter and tell the chef what you want, and it's cooked right in front of you from scratch. You get a card which the chef scans with everything you order, and then you pay at the till at the end on your way out. The food was so fresh and nice, and the restaurant interior is lovely. There's also plenty of outside seating if the weather permits!

Coffee Fellows

  • Cuisine: Cafe
  • Location: F1, 5 and at the train station
  • Price: ££

Coffee Fellows is a nice, if a little expensive, cafe chain. They do hot and cold drinks, cakes and sweet things, and really nice freshly-cooked bagels. The shop at F1 has a good outside seating area too. Maybe not an everyday coffee shop, but nice for brunch or to treat yourself.

St James Burger Bar

  • Cuisine: Burgers
  • Location: Hafenstraße 25-27
  • Price: ££

This burger bar is in Jungbusch, with an outside seating area available by the canal. It's particularly nice in the evening, when many people go for drinks. In terms of food, they have a variety of burgers available (including two non-meat options), as well as all the usual sides. Interestingly, they offer sweet potato fries with cinnamon and vanilla ice-cream as a dessert option - it sounds a bit weird but is actually pretty tasty if you're brave enough to give it a go! Although on the expensive side, this restaurant is really lovely and does great food.

Die Kuche

  • Cuisine: Varied
  • Location: Hafenstraße 49
  • Price: ££

This restaurant is a little bit tucked out of the way, but well worth going to. It has a lovely, relaxed feel and even has seating on an outdoor terrace with great views of the canal and surrounding area. You're best off booking a table, as it can get really quite busy at times. The food is delicious and great value for money, and there's something for everyone on the menu. A good atmosphere, good food, and good views - what more could you want?

Pizzeria Mamma Mia

  • Cuisine: Italian takeaway
  • Location: Hafenstraße 46
  • Price: £

This is a really cheap but good value takeaway place. The food is really nice, particularly the pizza, and served quickly! You can get it delivered or pick it up in store. Much cheaper than Domino's!

Gluck & Verstand

  • Cuisine: Varied
  • Location: H7, 30
  • Price: ££

This restaurant is really lovely for a meal out with friends. You're best off booking to make sure you get a table. The flammkuchen (almost like a really thin, crispy pizza) is particularly good here! The restaurant itself has a really nice atmosphere, especially in the evening. Well worth a visit and definitely good value for money!
