Merced square
One of the most famous squares in Malaga is the Merced square, specially few years ago. It is a square in the heart of the capital of the;Costa del Sol;, where in the middle there is an obelisk in tribute to General Torrijos, and also the native house of the artist Picasso, where nowadays there is the headquarters of the Picasso´s foundation. The name of the place has changed since the begining of history, firstly market square, then irrigation square and in the current name Plaza de la Merced. It was the point from where you could go to Granada or came from there, became a very important market in the area. Until a few years ago, this square became the site where the young people were the;botellon;, and stay all the night drinking in the square until late at night, the;botellon; was forbidden a few years ago in Malaga City, something disappointing for young people, because this square was a place where they spent the night with friends. Before arriving;anti-botellón; law, the;botellon; was moved to;los curas street;, about 500 meters from the square, a road that at night weekend was block off to do the;botellon;. Also in this square sometimes set up traditional markets, medieval markets, and during the film festival of Malaga, there are some activities in the square. A few years ago in the square, the city hall put a statue of Pablo Picasso (real size), which you can see in the picture.
