A romantic walk
During my Erasmus in Jena I had the opportunity to travel a lot. We used to organize daily trips to the nearest cities and often bought a group ticket, which was really cheap and which I advise you if you want to travel with friends through Germany.
One day we decided to go to Magdeburg, the capital city of Sachsen-Anhalt. The city offers a lot of touristic, artistic and natural things to see.
The city is in the north of the land, right on the river Elbe and is supposed to be one of the greenest cities of Germany. It’s a university city and because of that it’s young and alive! In the past, the city was the home of important emperors, like Otto I as it was a relevant political and cultural point and even Martin Luther is related to Magdeburg. In 1631 during the Magdeburgisieren the city was destroyed and most of the population died due to an invasion during the war. After the reconstruction, Magdeburg became the most important city in Prussia. Even Magdeburg then experienced nazism and the democratic republic time and became at the end an industrial center. The city is more than 1200 years old and offers very nice corners for tourists.
The list of the attractions can be very long, here I will tell you about the ones that most impressed me and my friends when we visited Magdeburg in October 2013.
First of all, the Magdeburger Dom, the symbol of the city.
The Grüne Zitadelle is a particular project from Hundertwasser that I found really interesting. You will find it walking from the station to the city center.
Even the bridges are worth to see: take a walk along the river, look at the city reflecting on its water, and go to the other part of Magdeburg. There you will find a very big park, where you can enjoy nature, rest for a while, have a picnic. There are some places in the middle of the park which create a very romantic atmosphere.
Here you can have a look at some wonderful places in the city. It’s easier to show you some pictures than to describe them, since I’m not that good with words...
I found Magdeburg so typical german and very romantic, due to the old medieval buildings and suggest it to everyone visiting Germany or studying/working near Sachsen-Anhalt as far as the city is not chaotic and your visit will be relaxed. The people we met there were really friendly, even Spiderman.
