Top Rooftop Bars in Madrid
Gymage
I don’t even know where to start with this place. Gymage is everything, it ranges from a hairdresser and beauty salon, to a protein stand, to an organic supermarket, to a theatre, to a gym and to a rooftop bar and restaurant. You could literally spend every day here and never get bored.
Firstly, if you are looking for a gym then this is it if you are living close to the centre. They have incredible offers going all the time and if you get a 6 month membership you will pay 36 euros a month which is a top price for such an amazing gym. They have many different activities including boxing, body pump, spinning, body combat and more all included in your monthly pass. Furthermore, the monthly pass gives you a 10% discount on their rooftop bar and restaurant.
The rooftop restaurant has a daily lunch menu with which for 10 euros you have a starter, a main course, a dessert and a drink all included. If you aren’t too keen on the set menu then they have numerous other options such as hummus, beef carpaccio, risotto, spinach and ricotta ravioli, burgers, salmon tartars, tuna tacos, slow cooked ribs. They also have a varied choice of desserts such as raspberry cheesecake, chocolate soufflé and the walnut brownie. Last time I went I chose the brownie, and the word delicious does not even cover it.
The rooftop has a very easy and tranquil atmosphere with large white leather sofas where you can lie down for as long as you like. They also have a long list of cocktails, fruit smoothies and protein shakes to choose from.
The Principal
The Principal is a five star luxury hotel based in the centre of Madrid just off Gran Via. It has a restaurant and a rooftop terrace open to the public; however, not many people are aware of this place. The decor is very classic and elegant with a boutique feel. There are two outdoor areas where you can sit and relax: La Terraza, which has an urban garden feeling to it with olive trees and bold coloured couches and the Atico, mainly a two-star Michelin restaurant with a beautiful, hidden terrace which is the perfect location for some peace and quite. The views from the two floors are stunning, overlooking the Metropolis Building, that is Madrid’s landmark and the Gran Via. I usually order some tea when I come here, and I love it because they always bring small chocolate rice-crispy cake bites alongside the hot drink which really adds a pleasing touch to the venue.
Bellas Artes
The Circulo Bellas Artes in Madrid is my favourite building in the city. Firstly, because of the cultural organization it houses, yet also because of its amazing rooftop bar. The Circulo Bellas Artes is a non-profit cultural institution founded in 1880 by a group of artists. The building holds different activities varying from visual art to literature, film and the performing arts.
The building itself was designed by a famous architect, Antonio Palacios who also built some of the most outstanding buildings in Madrid such as Palacio de Comunicaciones, Banco Central and Maudes Palace. Come here to immerse yourself in the culture of art. However, art is not the only thing the building focuses on. On the rooftop there is a large space with a bar and white leather sofas for you to lie down, relax and take in some Vitamin D.
Concerning the food, the Bellas Artes provide both breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. With regards to brunch you can choose from a standard British brunch, light brunch, an Iberian brunch which includes churros, cured meats and an antipasto, which is more of a savoury option. Lunches vary from salads and pasta to sandwiches. There is also the option of daily menus with a set price of 15 euros to dine in the restaurant and 17 euros to eat on the terrace. These menus vary every day but include things such as Salmorejo salads, rice, lentils, hamburgers and fish and chips. The food is of a great quality and the price, given the place and location is on point. Finally, the winning aspect of the Bellas Artes is the breath-taking view over the city. Almost a 360 degree view over the centre of Madrid, not to mention the beauty of the sky when the sun is setting. It is a perfect atmosphere for a late afternoon cocktail with friends or a date night. You must try the passion fruit mojito; it is exquisite and goes down a treat.
Oscar
The Oscar is a boutique hotel located in the centre of Madrid in Plaza Velazquez de Mella, just a few minutes off Gran Via. The hotel itself has a funky, modern design with a combination of bright colours and patterns starting from the entrance and following up in the corridors and the rooms. The hotel is a very easy, casual place that aims to make you feel at home. The only difference however, is that from your window you will have one of the best views of Madrid, not to mention an amazing rooftop terrace with a swimming pool.
The 74 rooms that range from a standard, executive, junior and regular suites have a wide range of necessary amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, a flat-screen television, a mini bar and a safe for you to keep your valuables. The room decor is very abstract and personally not my cup of tea because I prefer simpler colours in my rooms; however, I can see how the bright colours can be a fun change from the usual white and black designs. The rooftop terrace is a peaceful place for you to sit down and enjoy a drink whilst being surrounded by one of the top views of the city. It is a very chic terrace with white furniture including Balinese beds and chaise lounges. In the summer the swimming pool is open to the public and it is a perfect spot to spend an afternoon catching the vitamin D.
Terraza Cibeles
You know that architectural beauty in Plaza Cibeles? Yes, that incredible building whose exterior holds a sign saying “Refugees Welcome”, that sign that demonstrates that there are still right-minded humans on this planet. Yes, that beautiful building has a terrace. Located in between Plaza de la Independencia and Sol, Plaza de Cibeles is an emblematic point of the city.
This building was once the headquarters of the Spanish postal services, however recently it became the building of Communications. The famous Terraza Cibeles is located on the sixth floor of the building and it is one of the most romantic spots of the city. Whether you come during the day or at night the view from the terrace is spectacular, and if you come to look at the sunset then magical doesn’t even cut it.
The menu is very long, with a wide range of cocktails and spirits. I am someone who prefers their “Champagne Cocktails”. For 18 euros you can have a bellini (my favourite: champagne & peach) or a mimosa (champagne & orange juice). They also have champagne & cassis liqueur or champagne & blue curacao, however, I have not tried the last two. They also have an extensive list of wines and beers for you to chose from. Concerning the food, they have a small list of foods to share; these include marinated salmon, cheese tasting, a cured meat platter and pot croquettes.
However, if you are leaning towards something more sweet then let yourself be tempted by the “Cibeles” Banana Split. Book your spot from the website: Palacio de Cibeles Terrace .
