An Experience in Lübeck, Germany by Johanna
What is it like living in Lübeck? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The words "small but mighty" best describe Lübeck. A small, individual, cosy, wonderful city with lots of culture and history. The old town is neat and really beautiful. There is everything you need, yet with its small winding streets the town remains a mystery. There is always something new to discover. It is situated need the sea and you will always find a nice place to relax. All I can say is that I love Lübeck.
What is the student life like in Lübeck?
I study in Hamburg but I have lived in Lübeck since I was born. Therefore, I can talk from the perspective of an inhabitant that Lübeck is a beautiful city for everyone, including students. There are lots of small bars in the centre, snug restaurants and cinemas, gyms, clubs... everything the student heart desires. The only thing that isn't so good in Lübeck is the public transport. We only have busses and most of them only come every half an hour. So I recommend that you buy a bike for your time in Lübeck.
What is the cost of living in Lübeck?
The supermarkets are very cheap. Everything else like restaurants and bars are around 7-15€ for a dish in a restaurant, about 2, 50€ for a beer. You should probably buy alcohol in the supermarket if you need lots for a party etc.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Lübeck? Can you give any advice to other students?
I can't say much about the living situation in Lübeck. I can only give tips on where you can look: eBay Kleinanzeigen (local adverts on eBay) and eBay itself are always good places.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
There isn't a really typical dish from Lübeck as we eat different, international cuisine like the typical German potatoes with a type of meat.
I am a vegetarian and I get along very well. There are many vegetarian restaurants here.
However, Lübeck is famous for its Niederegger Marzipan (Lübeck Marzipan). I love it but try it for yourself.; ')
Which squares should you visit in Lübeck?
Lübeck is a historical city and a UNESCO world heritage city so the city is definitely worth seeing. Particularly beautiful is the The Holsten Gate, our landmarks and our 5 middle aged churches with the famous 7 towers. To eat, you can go to the older restaurant in Lübeck (originating from the end of the 16th century).
Is it possible to eat well in Lübeck? Want to tell us your favourite places?
For burgers the best place is "Leo's Juice and Burger" and "Peter Pane". For a restaurant/bar there is "BarCelona" (great view), the "Remix", the "Bolero" or the "Jazz Cafè".
Is the night life in Lübeck good? Where is the best place to party?
Two of the most well-known clubs are "A1" and "Parkhaus" (shutting soon). "Hüx" is more popular for over 30 year olds. Otherwise, there are various events in the "Gollan-Werft". Those who prefer small bars should look for the following: "Blauer Engel", "Sternschnuppe", "Weltwirtschaft" or "Funambules".
What advice would you want to give future students in Lübeck?
Northern Germans can be dismissive, but we just need time to thaw out. Feel free to ask your fellow students if they know good clubs or bars and so you can quickly talk and maybe arrange something. Drive to the Baltic Sea, for example to Travemünde, Timmdorf or Scharbeutz. Enjoy the close proximity, as within the centre you can reach everything on foot, walks to explore the city are recommended.
You just have to love Lübeck!
