Experience in Lille, France by Noemie

What is Lille like to live in? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Life in Lille is very simple. It is a big student city and therefore really lively. There are lots of museums, and things to do in your free time. It's a really nice city to live in.

What is the student lifestyle like in Lille?

The student atmosphere is really cool. We are mainly students, and so there are always things for us to do. During the evening, everything changes, and everywhere is really lively.

How much does it cost to live in Lille?

The rent in Lille is as high as in Paris (there's a very fine line between them). However, shopping and transport cost a lot less. The price of a beer is around 4 euros in bars in the Old Town, and 3 euros in Solferino.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Lille? Is there any advice you can give?

It is easy to find accommodation, there are lots of student halls. If I had some advice, the best thing would be to ask people who joined the university before you.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

There is a lot of fast-food in the city (mainly kebabs) You can find everything, from food stands where you can eat traditional food from Flandres.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

The best thing is to stroll down Lille's roads and lose yourself. The Citadelle is incredible, and so is the Old Town.

What's it like to eat out in Lille? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Wander down the streets, eat a Welsh and then have a waffle, you can't beat it!

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

It all depends on what kind of night out you're looking for. For an after-work drink with friends, it's best to head to the Old Town. For a more full-on night out, you can't top going to Rue Solferino and Rue Massena. My favourite bar is the Trading Bar (the official bar of my university).

What advice would you give to future students heading to Lille?

Enjoy yourself, go out and meet people. It's cultural and academic meet-up (every Thursday evening, all the different universities meet up for a drink).
