Why did you choose to go to Lille, France?

I really wanted to go to France and when asking my french friends on where to go they said that Lille is an amazing student city and in the north you find the friendliest people in France.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I was there for one semester and now I am a bit unsure about the amount of money.

What is the student lifestyle like in Lille?

There is usually always something going on in Lille whether it is a party or a field trip to a museum. There is a lot of student bars on the bar street. Then you can find a lot of nice wine and cocktail bars in the old town.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Lille to other students?

I can definitely recommend Lille it is a beautiful and friendly city with a lot to offer but with a small town feeling you will quickly feel at home and get to know the city.

What is the food like?

I would describe the food as good but don't expect french high cuisine at every corner. It's not really healthy food, a lot of bread and some more bread on that bread. So'good is a chain of health conscious options that are really nice. There is also some really nice restaurants in the old town that serves traditional regional dishes such as carbonade flamande which is lovely.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lille?

I did pay for the erasmus accommodation service without any luck though. It took me some time to find accommodation, I finally used the Facebook groups for short-term accommodation in Lille and I got really lucky with something close to school.

How much does it cost to live in Lille?

You should be prepared to pay around 500 €/month.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

there are language courses available. It's too bad that they are not every week but they are very useful. You should be prepared for meeting a lot of people who don't really speak english but usually you work something out.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lille from your city?

There are several ways to get to Lille. flying in to Brussels, London and Paris. The trains form these places are a bit expensive and there are cheaper alternatives with buses.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Lille?

I don't really go clubbing a lot so I would take some friends and go to bars in the old town specifically a wine bar called Bar bras that is really nice. Otherwise, when in the mood for dancing go to the club called Smile where they have different dance floors one with classic 80's-90's-00's music and the bottom floor with contemporary club music.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Lille?

I think its called Restaurant Vieux Lille, its a really cosy place with great service and good traditional regional dishes.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

You should definitely visit Musee beaux art in Lille and Musee La Piscine In Roubaix a neighboring town with a lot of history (you can get there easily with the metro). You should also at least take a stroll around la citadel, the fortes in Lille, if you want to visit you have to book in advance.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Lille in the future?

It might take a while to get used to the french way of life, keep a open mind and be curious to get to know the people around you and you will have an amazing time in Lille.
