Experience in Leiden University, Netherlands by Teodora
Generally, what is Leiden University like?
It is important to mention the context. In my case, I choose to study at Leiden University instead of any University in Romania. I will never regret the choice I made. I can only talk about the Leiden University campus in the Hague which is incredible, diverse and welcoming. It s places in the centre of the city and on weekdays stays open until 12pm.I can also only talk about my programme which was International Studies. Other programs might have different reviews.
What are the facilities like?
The facilities are on point. There are about three university buildings in the Hague but the biggest and most popular one is Wijhaven. Everything is new because the building was constructed less than three years ago so we have clean water to drink, study places, a cafeteria, library, yard and special classroom for presentations and other activities. I can mention that during busy periods it is very hard to find a study place and you may have to try the other buildings in the city. Moreover, the cafeteria we have is pretty limited and does not have a variety of dish, on top of that the prices are too high for students. (two fried eggs with some tomatoes can be 3 euros) And one more thing, we have an inner yard where you can relax but it is quite small compared to universities from the US or Eastern Europe.
What are the tutors like?
The professors are amazing. They come from different countries and they always respect the students, answer the question and are available to offer guidance and additional readings. The tutors are not always like that. The respect and involvement still hold but some may be underprepared to teach complex subjects of the university. Aside from that, they are open to feedback from students are often available to offer letters of recommendation.
Are the lessons easy in Leiden University?
At first, for someone coming from Romania, classes were a little challenging thinking that everyone was speaking English at quite a fast pace. But after the first year, everything was clear. Classes are not difficult but they require the student to invest time. If you do the readings and pay attention in class it is easy to pass and even get a good grade. Teachers are always understanding and can always explain things again or extend deadlines of assignments in case you are unable to complete them.
Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?
Sooo many activities. Every day almost there is something new happening at the campus. Some examples can be guest lectures, lectures on mental health and leadership, career events, MUNs, chess clubs, debate, movie nights.
One mention is that every activity has quite a professional vibe and it is organized by one of our student organizations so there are no spontaneous parties or shows.
Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?
The quality is amazing. The readings are always up to date and cover a variety of regions. There is always an opportunity to advance your studies and do more but you will also not be penalised if you stick to the curricula. I would mention that in my case, the practical dimension of my studies was lacking but at the same time I enjoyed the academic and theoretical reading and I believe they will help me in the future.
Are there any stories you can share?
The university is diverse and you can meet people from all over the world. Even if it is a Dutch university, in The Hague I had friends from Germany, Italy, the US, China, Egypt and Brazil.
The university is also extremely friendly towards LGBTQ people. We have gender neutral bathrooms and a lot of events dedicated to the community.
