Experience in Leeds, United Kingdom by Verity
What is it like to live in Leeds? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I love Leeds! I think it's a great place to be a student as the student population is such a big part of the town - things are geared up for students. The city itself isn't particularly beautiful or anything, but it's incredibly fun and I would definitely recommend it, but maybe only to those who like to party.
What is the student lifestyle like in Leeds?
Partying is a really big thing in Leeds - there are so many clubs and clubnights I am still learning of new places to go after two years!
How much does it cost to live in Leeds?
I come from London so consider Leeds to be quite cheap.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Leeds? Is there any advice you can give?
It isn't really difficult as there is so much housing for students, especially in the Hyde Park and Headingley areas. I think it's important to note that your house will definitely not be perfect - some landlords don't bother fixing things such as mould because they know we are students so won't make a massive fuss. Definitely try to look round houses before you sign for them as photos can be very deceiving!
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is just like normal food in the UK, but there are a lot of pubs which do cheap pub food like pies. There are also a lot of cheap takeaway shops which are perfect after a night out, although I probably wouldn't go in during the day.
What places would you recommend visiting in Leeds?
I personally don't think that there is much to visit in Leeds exactly, but the shopping facilities there are really good.
Is it good to eat out in Leeds? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There are plenty of restaurants in the city centre! My favourite Indian restaurant is Akbars on the Headrow.
Is the nightlife good in Leeds? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is incredible! There are so many different places to go, and there are many special clubnights so you can go to the same place twice but have completely different drinks and music. I love going to hifi on a wednesday for motown night, but the Leeds University Union's Fruity on a Friday is always a good night out - there are three clubs within the union so there is a wide variety of music.
What advice would you give future students headed to Leeds?
Be ready to party!
