Erasmus Experience in Leeds, the United Kingdom by Carla
Why did you choose to go to Leeds, the United Kingdom?
Because I saw it wasn't too much of an expensive city such as London and above all, for the University of Leeds and my masters.
The University of Leeds
How long does the scholarship last? How much money do you recieve as aid?
I am not on a scholarship.
How is student life in Leeds?
It's impressive. The University of Leeds has everything that the students need in one building. In this building, there are several clubs, bars, a supermarket, food stalls, a hairdresser, a second hand shop, an organic shop, a Santander... everything! What's more, it has more than 200 societies and many, many activities. Other than that, there is a Facebook group (Viva La Fiesta UK and Leeds FiestaParties), which organises several parties for foreign people and the Spanish. There are a load of discounts just for being a student too; and if you get the NUS card for many other companies (such as Amazon).
Would you recommend the city and the University of Leeds to other students?
Totally. It's a city for students/university students. There are like 4 universities here, so imagine!
How is the country's food?
There is a bit of everything. The other day, I discovered in a supermarket chorizo and Serrano ham, although it's rare to find. The food is good but it's better (and cheaper) to go to the supermarket to eat good meat and vegetables.
Was it hard to find accommodation in Leeds?
Not at all. I already had a house by my second day here. Being a city with many students, there are many houses available.
How much does it cost to live in Leeds?
Around 700 pounds a month.
How is the language? Did you go to any courses at the University?
The people from around here have a different accent to the one we are accustomed too. However, it's just getting used to it and the teachers speak very clearly.
What's the most affordable way of getting to Leeds from your city?
With Ryanair.
Which places would you recommend to go out to party in Leeds
To the international parties and on Call Lane.
And to eat in Leeds? Can you name your favourite places?
I haven't tried much food from here... I usually eat either in the Students' Union or at home. I can only recommend Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Homemade Burger, Wagamama and Nandos.
And as a cultural visit?
The Castle, Kirkstall Abbey and the museum (it has a mummy! )
Kirkstall Abbey
Any advice that you want to give to future students in Leeds?
Leeds is good in terms of prices, the people are accustomed to living with foreigners, there is a Spanish community (although I still haven't been in contact with them too much) and there is a lot of student atmosphere. It doesn't rain everyday but it is cold. However, it's not wet so it's tolerated well.
I recommend it 100% to students!
