Disadvantages of studying in Malaysia

Another overdue entry, I'm feeling like these 10 day absences really put me behind my schedule but do not worry, I'm here to stay and keep them entries coming. I'm going to mention the disadvantages of studying in Malaysia in my own opinion. You guys I want to remind you all that, these are all strictly my personal opinions, based on my years of living and studying here, nothing else, so please do take everything else in consideration too.

1) The weather

I know I included this in the advantages column too; it is both a blessing and a curse if I want to put it frankly. The lack of change of seasons, the constant heat and humidity does get tedious at times. I sometimes felt like I didn’t realize how months went by just because there wasn’t anything changing between one month and the other, weather wise. When it's about 35 degrees and sweat is dripping down the back of your neck, you really think of winter, and how it was nice to see the snow, I think you guys get an idea. So yes all year sunshine is great but it also does make you miss that change of the seasons.

The humidity, the heat and the rainfalls are all part of the everyday Malaysian life, keep it in mind.

2) Safety

I wouldn’t say Malaysia is not a safe country, because that would be an utter lie, it is a pretty safe country. It is definitely not too safe, especially at nights and in rather touristic areas, let me elaborate. First of all at night, it is a little dangerous to be alone, doesn’t really matter if you are a male or female, you could get robbed either way. I really don’t suggest walking alone at night, walking in groups does help or walking in crowded places, after all KL is another big city and these things are normal. Now why did I say the touristic areas, well because there are a lot of pickpockets around those areas, you won’t get attacked but it is a possibility that you would lose your money etc, in this case you just need to be more careful and have an eye on your personal belongings.

3) Job opportunities

Now let’s look at this from a future expectations point of view, what are your plans after graduation? Do you plan to stay and work in Malaysia or are you just choosing Malaysia for a couple of years and then leaving to another destination, well if your answer is yes to the first part of my question, then you need to really think it through. I'm not going to say there aren’t jobs for you here in Malaysia when you graduate, I'm going to say there are very few job positions available for you here especially when you are a foreigner. It is rather hard to find an employment that would also provide a visa for you, but this all really depends on your capabilities and the field you choose to study in. so don’t lose hope.

4) Long term plans of residency

A lot of people plan to choose a country in which they can reside in for a long time and become residents or citizens there. Not every one plans to go back to their country of origin, I plan to. Anyways if that is the case for you too, Malaysia is not a good option, as you can't possibly become a citizen in Malaysia, under the conventional ways which are available in countries like Canada and the USA. I'm sure you all will do plenty of research before making a huge decision like this.

Hope this information helps.

Cheers
