What is it like to live in Kiel? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Kiel is very much a student city, which therefore offers many things to do. It is a big city but it is located directly at the sea and has a harbour. Also it only takes like 20 minutes to go to many beaches by public transport. Even though in fall and winter Kiel has a lot of rainy days, one nice and sunny day makes you forget about that. It is a beautiful place to live as a student.

What is the student lifestyle like in Kiel?

Most of the faculties are located at the main campus, which is easy to get to from most parts of the city by public transport or by bike. It has two big cafeterias, a huge main library and many department libraries. There is also a pool and a fitness studio in the university area.

How much does it cost to live in Kiel?

You would have to spend around 250 to 350 euro on a room in a shared apartment, depending on its size and the location in town. And then it depends whether you cook at home a lot or eat out more. But in general Kiel is pretty affordable to live in and definitely cheaper than larger cities like Hamburg for example.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Kiel? Is there any advice you can give?

It's always a little more difficult to find accommodation in Kiel just before the next semester starts. However, there are always offers online or on black boards in university buildings for example.

It is usually best to be in town to find a room, because most members of shared apartments want to meet their new roomie in person to chat with them and find out if they get along.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Since Kiel is located by the sea, fish is definitely very important. However, it is also fairly easy to find vegetarian and vegan food all around town.

What places would you recommend visiting in Kiel?

I would definitely recommend visiting the beaches such as Falkenstein and Laboe. Also it is nice to stroll down the Förde or Holtenauer Straße, which is a shopping street.

Is it good to eat out in Kiel? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Check out Fischbar at the Förde where they have fish and chips and Fischbrötchen.

Is the nightlife good in Kiel? Where is good to go?

When you're new in Kiel there are a few clubs to try out. Also there are a few nice bars in town.

What advice would you give future students heading to Kiel?

Kiel is a great sized city to live in as a student! Get a bike and start exploring this city!
