Experience in Kiel, Germany by Austin
What is it like to live in Kiel? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Its a good town for studies. As its close to both Hamburg and Berlin, you have opportunity to enjoy a city visit, or remain in Kiel for a low key vibe. Its kind of inbetween a rural and urban lifestyle. Town is quite lovely and does have character, especially in the spring.
What is the student lifestyle like in Kiel?
Very laid back, easy going. Spring time brings a lighter vibe around certain parts and the Kieler Woche is an exciting event to take part in.
How much does it cost to live in Kiel?
Relatively cheap cost of living. My rent was only 248 euro per month for student dorms. Small room, but provided all the requirments.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Kiel? Is there any advice you can give?
Fairly difficult to find a place close to the university, but if you're willing to commute further distance (not much though) it shouldn't be a problem.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Not the best, but not bad. Decent burger spots, Italian food, and as a college student, get to know the 2 euro Döner, which can be purchased at most turkish kebab shops. Good price, and filling street food. Wish I had them where I am now.
What places would you recommend visiting in Kiel?
Some of the near by beaches, Holtenauer street, down by the docks and yacht club. The city center is a nice place to explore as well. Check out the Kieler Brewery on a Friday for the German drinking and singing experience.
Is it good to eat out in Kiel? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Didn't eat out much. Like I mentioned - Döners.
Is the nightlife good in Kiel? Where is good to go?
A few spots on the way to town - Good Irish bar (? ) and some clubs. They get a bit crazy on the weekends if you're into that kind of thing. Be prepared for lots of singing
What advice would you give future students heading to Kiel?
Give it time to feel at home in Kiel. Northern germans have a tough outer shell to crack and will seem cold at first, but if your manage to befriend a few and gain there trust, you will find they can be the best friends (most considerate and loving) you've ever had. Be patient for at least 3-4 months.
