What is it like to live in Johannesburg? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It is not recommended to stay within the city Centre, it is better to stay in the suburbs and commute, if you are not staying in one of the university residents. The city Centre is generally not safe. Travel after dark in the city Centre is not recommended.

How much does it cost to live in Johannesburg?

A private single apartment in a really good area with a 20 minute drive to campus on average can cost you around $450 a little more if you require parking.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Johannesburg? Is there any advice you can give?

It is fairly easy to get accommodation, many families will rent out a room or there are flatshare opportunities. University residence are not recommended as these are usually very full.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

All types of food dishes are excellent. You will find restaurants that cater for every palate. Red meat is popular, and is reported to be amongst the finest in the world.

What places would you recommend visiting in Johannesburg?

New town, Soweto, the Nelson Mandela museum, there are few historical sites worth a visit.

Is it good to eat out in Johannesburg? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

By world standards eating out is fairly cheap. There are many excellent eating venues.

Is the nightlife good in Johannesburg? Where is good to go?

Monte Casino, Pineslopes, Melville, Pankhurst and Greenside are popular areas for a good night out.

What advice would you give future students heading to Johannesburg?

Stay in the Northern suburbs. Be streetwise and always aware of your surroundings. Do not carry large amounts of cash or wear expensive jewelry.
