Experience in Huntington, United States by Andrea

What is it like to live in Huntington? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Huntington is a great place to go to school, but be careful wandering too far from campus. The city is very small, and most places are only driving distance away.

What is the student lifestyle like in Huntington?

Most students either drive to school or live on campus. There are several local bars that are common places for students. Marshall University is a beautiful campus, and it is not difficult to navigate. There is a plaza within walking distance of campus that contains a few stores, a movie theater, and several restaurants. One of the biggest events for students is football season. There is nothing a West Virginian loves more than cheering on the Thundering Herd at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

How much does it cost to live in Huntington?

Living in Huntington is not very expensive. Food is generally cheap compared to other cities. However, there are some expensive, but divine, restaurants in town. The closer you get to campus, the more expensive housing is. Many students choose to live further from campus and ride a bike to school.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is Huntington is greasy and fattening, but that is what makes it good. The pepperoni roll is the state food, and if you have never had one, you are missing out. If you want to try "good old fashioned home cooking", Cracker Barrel is the place to go.

What places would you recommend visiting in Huntington?

While in Huntington, I recommend you visit Marshall University, the Keith Albee, and Hillbilly Hotdogs. Marshall has a beautiful campus that explodes with student life throughout the school year. The Keith Albee is a theater that shows plays and various acts. Acts like Aziz Ansari and the Blue Man Group have made appearances there. It is full of history and old architecture. And, of course, Hillbilly Hotdogs is the most stereotypical restaurant in Huntington. The place may look dirty, but it is always clean and a good place to have a laugh and a hotdog.

Is it good to eat out in Huntington? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Eating out in Huntington may be delicious, but it can get expensive. Definitely try to cook too. My favorite restaurants in Huntington are Roosters, Five Guys, and Jim's Spaghetti. Jim's Spaghetti is a restaurant that is full of history of the town. I recommend going there for their famous pies. And, of course, Hillbilly Hotdogs is the most stereotypical restaurant in Huntington. The place may look dirty, but it is always clean and a good place to have a laugh and a hotdog.

Is the nightlife good in Huntington? Where is good to go?

No.

What advice would you give future students heading to Huntington?

Bring an umbrella and rain boots! It rains a lot during the fall months. In the winter, it gets very cold, sometimes below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. I would recommend going during the fall semester. That is the best time for student life. With football games almost every Saturday and student activities during the week, you will never be bored and meet lots of wonderful people!
