The Kronborg Castle of Hamlet
The introduction
Hello everyone, I hope, that you are all doing just fine!
In this article I want to tell you about this place, where visiting is a must and it’s called the Kronborg castle and it’s located outside the city of Copenhagen, however, it’s not that far away from there and everyone visiting Copenhagen should go and visit the castle. The place is very beautiful and the castle is pretty large and everything there is royal and worth seeing. And, besides, there are information papers in every room and hall and corner in some different languages and everyone can just go to them and read them to get to know some things about the castle and life there in different ages throughout the history.
Well, I visited the castle in the summer, when it was great weather and just the time to visit the castle. My trip there was a pretty good one and really worth it, I must say.
About Kronborg Castle
According to the poem, there in Kronborg castle lived the characters and the Hamlet himself in “Hamlet”.
Kronborg castle is the real middle ages castle, exciting, scary, fascinating and beautiful. There you can find the ways of Hamlet and follow him through the tunnels of the castle, however, I must say, that it’s not really a Hamlet’s castle, as it is in Shakespeare’s sonnet. Rather, the castle of such person like Hamlet is located pretty far away from the Kronborg palace and, well, it’s true, that such person existed and he lived in a castle somewhere. Well, Shakespeare liked the Kronborg castle, I guess, and that’s why he placed his Hamlet there. Though, you should know, that it’s just a myth and he didn’t really live there in Kronborg castle.
My visit to Kronborg Castle
My visit to Kronborg Castle started with some wrong choices, because when I got to the Norreport railway station, from where I had the starting point towards Helsingor, which is the city where Kronborg Castle is located, I couldn’t find my way to there, because none of the signs said, that the train was going to Helsingor and my google maps was showing, that there was a train going directly towards there. When I got to this train, which I thought that was going to Helsingor, it stopped somewhere and then went back to the Norreport station, so that I was back where I started. Fortunately then I found some other students and I heard them talking about Hamlet and Shakespeare and I asked them if they were going to Kronborg Castle and they said “yes”, so that I would go there with them. It turned out that the rail road to Helsingor was been reconstructed and that was why we had to stop at Hellerup railway station and we would continue our way to Helsingor with a bus.
When we got out of the bus, everything seemed so beautiful around with the blue sea and the birds and the ships. We could see those large ships going to Sweden , because Helsingor is the closest city to the border of Sweden.
We could also see the wonderful castle of Kronborg and we then walked towards it. It was not very near, however, we could just walk along the embankment and get to the castle while we would meet the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark along the way and we would cross this large square, where the dining places were set up.
There were many tourists going to the Kronborg castle and the weather was great, too. I had my Copenhagen card, which allowed me to visit the castle free of charge, I would just have to show them the card.
Going to the castle, you will see the signs pointing at the castle and telling you, that you can enjoy your visit there even more, because there’s a Hamlet performance going on inside the castle.
A great thing there is that you have a free wi-fi access throughout the castle!
Well, first of all, until going into the castle you see these hills nearby the harbor, where the catapults and guns are located. They are all different sizes and looking towards the harbor.
Then you get inside and everything is just like in the medieval ages there. You will walk into the archs and go into the halls, which are all connected to each other.
First of all, you get into this square paved with stones, where you will find a scene and there are the performers performing a scene from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It starts at 12 o’clock, so that when I went there it was just the time of the performance. The actors and actresses wear these beautiful dresses and they are all into the performance.
You can go inside the castle and walk into the halls while looking at the royal armour and kitchenware and the chairs and tables and books, beds, etc. there are all the great things exhibited in the rooms.
While looking at the royal things, you will meet the performers in some rooms still performing the roles of kings and queens and princes, etc. It’s really entertaining. You can even meet some actress sitting on the stairs acting even if no one is around.
The views from the castle of the harbor is amazing and it would have been really wonderful living there.
You can also climb the tower, which is 120 steps or something and it’s really tiring and narrow, however, it’s worth climbing up there, because the landscape that you will see from there you will never forget.
