Places outside Copenhagen _ Helsingør
The introduction
Hello everyone, I hope, that you are all doing just fine.
In this article I want to tell you about the places outside the city of Copenhagen, which are worth visiting in my experience.
Well, when visiting Copenhagen, it’s not enough to be there for a couple of days to just get to know the city itself, however, while being there, you should also visit some other places not very far from Copenhagen and see the amazing nature and castles and places there.
So that, let me tell you about those places, where I have been to and I recommend you going there, too.
Helsingør
Helsingør is a place, which is also called as Elsinore. It’s a city on the shores of the sea, which connects Denmark to Sweden. It’s 45 km far from the city of Copenhagen and it needed about 1-hour drive to get there when I visited Copenhagen. However, that was because they were renovating the railway towards Helsingør, and we had to first go halfway with the train and then get to the bus, which went directly to the city of Helsingør.
The main reason, why people go and visit this place is the Kronborg Castle, which is said to be the Hamlet castle, and that is the place, which Shakespeare thought of when he wrote Hamlet. Of course, there has not been any Hamlet living there, however, the castle is amazing and you should really see it for yourself to get to know the history of Denmark and how they lived in the royal families some centuries ago. The castle is pretty large and there are beautiful views of the harbor. You should also see the dungeons, which are kind of scary and there would have been plenty of mysteries happen in there. Also, there are Hamlet performed in the yard of Kronborg castle and not just there, the role plays continue in the passageways and staircases and large rooms, etc. It’s very exciting and you can see the actors and actresses enjoy their performance, too.
The other reason, why you should visit Helsingør is the M/S maritime museum of Denmark, which is dedicated to the seafaring of Denmark. I didn’t realize how large this museum could be until I saw every corner of it there. There’s a huge collection of all the different Danish ships exhibited there with their history and architecture, which is really exciting. You will also see the very usual part of seafaring, which is the gold and treasure chests and women. There are actual things exhibited in this room of hidden stories of Danish sailors and the stories, why there were women encarved on the ships in the front ends. You can also enjoy visiting the LEGO room almost in the entrance of the museum, where they usually leave children to have fun while the adults are visiting the museum. There are huge ships made from Lego things and castles and cars, which not just children but the adults will love, too. I don’t love Lego toys that much, however, I spent pretty long time in that Lego room exploring the figures, which were constructed by children or by someone else, I don’t know.
Another thing in Helsingor is the Oresund Aquarium, which I visited during my being there and if you love sea animals and fish you should definitely go there, especially if you have that Copenhagen Card, which allows you to visit the aquarium free of charge. There are starfishes and some other things, that you can even touch in the open aquarium and that is pretty cool!
There’s this harbor in front of Gronnehave called Verona and it’s an amazing place for people who have never seen so many boats! I had just seen them in the photos and I had never imagined such places until I saw this Verona place. Just when you walk out from the Kronborg castle, you see the Gronnehave and the harbor itself, so that you can walk towards there and get close to those boats parked there. The view is just great and you will want to take the photos there, however, you should know, that there will probably be some wind.
When you head towards the city from Gronnehave you will see this park, where there’s a Danserindebrønden, which is a fountain with a statue in the center of it and there are lots of flowers around, which makes this an amazing place to sit and relax a little.
You can also see the city museum and the Museum of Science and Technology, which is a great thing to visit if you are interested in science and technology and airplanes especially. You can also visit St. Olaf’s church dating back to the 13th century and the Carmelite monastery dating back to the 15th century.
There are lots of things to see in Helsingor and one of my favorite things to do there is to get to the shore of the ocean and walk barefoot in that white sand near the water.
When you get to the Helsingor harbor, the very first thing you see are the ships, which sail all the way to Sweden. Well, to tell you the truth, Helsingor is the city, which is the closest one to the Swedish border, so that ships sail from there to Sweden in every half an hour or so taking tourists to Sweden and back. You can also see the Helracles statue from that point, which is located at the end point of the harbor ground.
