Experience in Helsingborg, Sweden by Matilda
What is it like to live in Helsingborg? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Helsingborg is a vibrant city with lots of great restaurants, cafe's, pubs and bars. There is a lot of parks and the city is green and lush. You are very close to other big city's such as Malmö, Lund and Copenhagen. From Helsingborg you can take the ferry over to Helsingör, Denmark, in under 30min.
People are friendly and quite helpful.
What is the student lifestyle like in Helsingborg?
The studentlife is good! It's quite a new university-town,the campus is only 10 years old. But there is plenty of things to do as a student (studentchoir, sports, studentrestuarant and pub,etc.etc.)
It doesn't cost much do buy a membership and many things are free.
How much does it cost to live in Helsingborg?
It can be quite expensive depending on where you want to live (as in any big-ish city). You can live in the north part of town which is the more expensive part or in the south part (where most of the studenthousing is placed).
Cost for food can vary, but there are everything from supermarkets and markets on the town squares.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Helsingborg? Is there any advice you can give?
Yes and No, there are studenthousing - but you have to search for it yourself, the university does not guarantee apartments for 'regular students'. I am not sure how the situation is for exchangestudents.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
There is a great food-scene in Helsingborg! It's the city in Sweden which has most resturants/café/bars/pubs per inhabitant - so there is much to chose from. My favourites are:
Marias Tapas - For Tapas (of course; )
Meze - makes the citys best Köfte (lamb)
Pitcher's - A pub that makes amazing burgers and a fantastic caesar-sallad
Kol - a fancy meat and seafood restaurant that also makes awesome cocktails.
What places would you recommend visiting in Helsingborg?
For something sweet i recommend:
Ebbas Skafferi - a café straight grom the 50's with supersized cookies!
Fahlmans - the citys oldest café with wonderful pastries.
Koppi - Makes great coffee!
Is it good to eat out in Helsingborg? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
See above :)
Is the nightlife good in Helsingborg? Where is good to go?
There is so much to choos from that i can't list them all - but there is something for everyone!
What advice would you give future students heading to Helsingborg?
Get two librarycards - one for the university library and one for the public one (they do not use the same system) the public library has a good cafeteria where you can hang out with your studygroup, getting grouprooms at campus is very difficult.
