What is it like to live in Greifswald? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Greifswald is not a big city but just big enough to constantly discover new things. I like to live in Greifswald because everything is easy to reach by bike and I just do not like this big city hustle and bustle. Above all, Greifswald offers a beautiful environment with the Ryck, on the shores of which you can wonderfully cycle to the Wieck district. The people here in the north have their own peculiarities and are a bit strange for people like me who come from near Berlin. Nevertheless, you are almost always treated friendly and above all, you always get help, if you need it.

What is the student lifestyle like in Greifswald?

I could not have imagined a better student time! The university is not that big with its 17,000 students. So you're not just a number in the system, but the professors can often assign a face to a name and are interested in their apprentices. Of course, I can only talk about what I have experienced myself. My degree program consisted of only 40 people, so everyone knew everyone. The seminars were often only half full so that one could learn better. Exams were individually adapted to this small number of students. In each institute, there were different small events in the year, in which music was heard, grilled, and of course also drunk. Several clubs and bars add extra fun to the time of the study.

How much does it cost to live in Greifswald?

If you decide to live in one of the student residences, then the rents are quite affordable. And I can say that a dorm room is by no means worse than a home of its own. The cost of living is in my opinion on average high and can be compared with those in Berlin well. Unfortunately, I find that the restaurants, for being a student city, are overpriced.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Greifswald? Is there any advice you can give?

Finding a place to stay is easy. You just have to be clear about what price you want to pay. For students who would like to spend a semester abroad, I would recommend looking for a room in a student lounge or looking for a room in a shared flat. Information about dormitories can be found on the Uni website under "Housing" and shared apartments probably also on the Internet or through connections with people who have already lived or lived here.

What places would you recommend visiting in Greifswald?

In Greifswald, there is a cute little zoo! The entry costs not much and you can relax incredibly well.

The path that leads along the Ryck to Wieck is especially beautiful in summer and winter. The small shopping street in Greifswald's city center may also be worth a visit. In the summer you can go for a small entrance fee in Eldene on the beach and go swimming in the bay. If you prefer to go swimming undisturbed, you should go by bike to Wampen. The drive to Stralsund by train is always worthwhile.

Is it good to eat out in Greifswald? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

To eat out in Greifswald is, in my opinion, not a cheap pleasure. As a student, you can not afford that often. But if you do not want to cook yourself and have a little appetite for fast food, then I can only recommend the small fishing boats in Greifswald Museum Harbor. Just like the "Fritz" at the marketplace or the Chinese at the Ryck. For students, I think the "Humboldt" right at the entrance to the city center. Also in the district Wieck there are several (especially expensive) restaurants. For those who like to eat sweets: it tastes best in my opinion in the small "Café Natalie" (and the prices are also normal here).

Is the nightlife good in Greifswald? Where is good to go?

I think Greifswald is too small for fantastic, vibrant nightlife. But if you know the right places and the right people, you can have fun with a few clubs and bars. The various institutes of the university have their own small clubs in which within the week actually constantly to different motives can be celebrated.

What advice would you give future students heading to Greifswald?

The future students in Greifswald, I advise, not to have too many expectations of party life. But you will learn a lot and be supported in all turmoil. As I said, looking for a dormitory or a shared flat to save costs. But most important: enjoy the time on the coast, ride as often as you can on the Bodden or to Rügen! Greifswald is definitely a city worth living in.
