My Erasmus experience in Graz, Austria by Adèle

Why did you choose to go to Graz, Austria?

The university lived up to my expectations. I also like hiking in Austria so was attracted to the country.

How long did you stay in Graz? How much funding did you receive?

I stayed for 6 months.

I received 1600€ in total from the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

What is student life like in Graz?

Nice, you'll meet other Erasmus students as well as home students.

Would you recommend the city and the university to other students?

Yes.

What is the food like?

Quite limited. There are some specialities using pumpkin seeds as a base (oil or bread) but it's not difficult to find busy shops. There are also a lot of meat based specialities.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Graz?

Not at all. I managed to find a room to sublet on OEAD. I lived with two very nice Austrians who helped me explore the country. There is also lots of university accommodation.

What is the cost of living like in Graz?

Life is quite expensive, mostly food and transport. But for eating out, lots of pubs serve reasonably priced food. It's often just as cheap as cooking for yourself. I would recommend the Kaiser-Joseph market which takes place every day - you can find lots of local products and a reasonable cost.

How did you find learning the language?

I don't speak German. All of my classes are in English and most Erasmus students speak English. The Austrians speak English very well. I had English classes every week.

What is the cheapest way of getting to Graz from your home?

I flew from Geneva to Vienna with Easyjet. Then I took the Flixbus from Vienna to Graz.

Where would you recommend going out in Graz?

  • Pub: Office Pub.
  • Nightclub: PPC.

And for food? What are your favourite places?

Pub: Kaiser Smoked, la Posaune.

What about cultural sights?

Schlossberg bell tower is good during the day and at night, and I'd also recommend the museums.

Any advice to future exchange students in Graz?

Use your Erasmus experience to travel as much as you can. Austria borders a lot of countries. I'd recommend Slovenia, Hungary and other neighbouring countries.
