Why did you choose to go to Graz, Austria?

A friend recommended it to me.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

My scholarship was for 2 semestres (9 months). I got €660 a month, if I remember correctly.

What is the student lifestyle like in Graz?

The atmosphere is amazing. Graz is pretty much a university city.

What is the food like?

Well... I have to say first that I do prefer Spanish food. But the good thing about the food here is its many different ingredients, like the pumpkin seed oil, its delicious salads and so many other dishes. They have bread of every kind and colour and amazing sausage. Although, I must say that the kebabs and the Turkish food has become very common here.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Graz to other students?

Of course. I couldn't be more in love with Graz, for its university as much as the city itself, as well as giving me a warm welcome, they have given me new insight into European academia.

How did you find accommodation?

On the Internet.

How much does accommodation cost there? And what are the prices like in general there?

The price of accommodation vary depending on where you rent. If it's a residence or a shared house (they're called WG), if you're near the city centre or further out. I paid €282 a month, I lived in a big flat with 5 other people, but I knew people who lived in the residences paying €100 or so. I guess they knew where to look!

In general, the prices are the same as in Seville.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Well, without knowing I was coming to Graz, I was the top of my German class 3 years ago! I didn't remember anything, but I did find it easier than most people to pick it up. However, you can get by perfectly well with English... pretty much everyone speaks it, especially young people!

What is the easiest way to go to Graz from your home city?

From Seville, the easiest way to go there is to fly to London and flying from there to Graz. You do have to spend the night in the airport when you're going out there. Also, I would strongly advise against getting any Ryanair flights. The best thing, even though it is more expensive, is to fly with Air Berlin's low cost airline, which is called Fly Niki, I think.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Graz?

It depends on what you're into. If you like rock, punk, heavy metal, etc, you can go to Music House. If you like to party to current music and want to get with people, go to the Three Monkeys (I hate it there, but a lot of my friends went there a lot).

The best place for me, but only when the weather is good, is the Parkhaus, it's a pub with a lot of different music and a greenhouse, if I remember correctly, in the city park.

And to eat in Graz? What are some of your favourite places?

I would recommend Pamukale on the Dietrich Steinplatz (for Kebabs), go to the Sägeberg if you want a great pizza, that's cooked to order and super cheap. But I don't remember the name of my favourite place! It was a little bar behind the Kunsthaus, where you could get to eat brains... I didn't try it!

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

For a cultural visit, I'd recommend the mountains surrounding Graz, but the first thing you have to do when you arrive is to go up Schlossberg.

Do you have any advice for future students in Graz?

Don't ride a bike (they have them in the city) if you've been drinking! Go skiing, snowboarding or just to see the mountains, sign up for Aikido and have a good time!
