Experience in Graz, Austria by Ana
What is it like to live in Graz? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The experience of living in Graz is great. It isn't a crowded city and it offers you lots of possibilities to do different activities; it has many places to be visited and its people are very friendly. I would totally recommend coming here, it has the facilities of the biggest cities and the cozy atmosphere of the smallest ones.
What is the student lifestyle like in Graz?
The student lifestyle is great, because there are lots of Erasmus students together with the locals, and the city is prepared to welcome all the students. From my point of view, the education is very good here.
How much does it cost to live in Graz?
If we compare the cost of living in Graz and the cost of Spain, there are many similar things in terms of prices; there are only few things that are more pricey, such as the chicken or some clothing brands, and if you want to go to a cafe and drink something, the prices are higher than the ones in Spain.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Graz? Is there any advice you can give?
It isn't difficult to find accommodation in Graz, because there are many homes for students, but there are also lots of Erasmus students, so my advice would be to start searching for an accommodation as soon as possible, just to be sure that you have a place.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is quite good; the Schnitzel with sauce is really tasty, and there are lots of different sweet things, such as the Manner or the Kekse, which are so good!
What places would you recommend visiting in Graz?
There are many places that should be visited in Graz, but the place that I would recommend the most is the Schlossberg, because of its views of the city; I also would recommend having a walk by the river and, of course, visiting the Hauptplatz and the narrow streets near it, which are lovely.
Is it good to eat out in Graz? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It is good to eat out in Graz, and if you want to eat typical food, there is a restaurant in one of the narrow streets near the Hauptplatz; it isn't expensive and the food is very tasty. And there is also another good restaurant near it, called Osteria, which offers Italian food and is very cheap.
Is the nightlife good in Graz? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is quite good; Graz has got a lot of students, Austrian people and Erasmus, so it has many places to go out at night. In Elizabethstrasse there are many discos, and one that is quite good is Kultus. Postgarage is also a good disco, although it isn't located in the main city of the party. In Graz you can find many pubs too, and one that is always full of people is the Irish one Flann o'Brien.
What advice would you give future students headed to Graz?
I would tell them to enjoy this, to learn, explore and experience as much as they can. Make the most of it.
