Why did you choose to go to Graz, Austria?

I wanted to improve my knowledge of German in a country other than Germany which is similar to Belgium, my home country. I chose Graz because it is a fantastic student city and not too big.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I studied in Graz for 5 months and I received an Erasmus grant of 325 euros per month.

What is the student lifestyle like in Graz?

There is always a party in nightclubs like Postgarage and TAM TAM. But most students attend the weekly pubs on Wednesday night. The Office Pub is the perfect place to meet other exchange students. On sunny days you can find the students chilling on top of Schlossberg or in Stadtpark.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Graz to other students?

Absolutely. It is not big but you will never be bored.

What is the food like?

The food in Austria is amazing. You can find Bausatzlokale all over the city. They are well-known for their delicious meals and student prices.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Graz?

Please trust me and avoid OeAD-Housing. First it seems like the best option because you don't know the city but they ask way too much money. I heard very bad things about them. Don't give your money to a student dorm but rent a room in a shared flat.

How much does it cost to live in Graz?

Per month I would say 300 euros for accommodation and 300 euros for food, parties and ESN activities.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

For me, learning German was easy because I am a language student. I would consider a language course at FH Joanneum in Graz. They are adapted to your level and also welcome students from other universities.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Graz from your city?

By bike, without doubt. But I personally prefer taking the tram. The city of Graz offers a public transport card for only 8O euros. You can use this all semester long.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Graz?

There is always a party in nightclubs like Postgarage and TAM TAM. But most students attend the weekly pubs on Wednesday night. The Office Pub is the perfect place to meet other exchange students. On sunny days you can find them chilling on top of Schlossberg or in Stadtpark.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Graz?

The food in Austria is amazing. You can find Bausatzlokale all over the place. They are well-known for their delicious meals and student prices.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Schlossberg, Landeszeughaus, Schloss Eggenberg and Kunsthaus.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Graz in the future?

Wake up early and go sit by the river. Grab a coffee at Tribeka. Introduce yourself. Become a volunteer at Bohemian Soul. Join ESN. Take some time for yourself. Eat healthy. Keep in touch with family and friends. Work hard in school. Enjoy the sunset at Schlossberg. Go for a drink at Cafe Mitte. Meet Austrian people. Try to go back home.
