Erasmus experience in Graz, Austria by Domitille

Why did you choose to go to Graz, in Austria?

I wanted to have an experience abroad, and improve my German. I also came for the good reputation of the university in Graz, because I like the Austrian culture and my parents lived there, therefore it is a country which is already familier to me.

How long are you staying for? How much financial help do you receive?

Around one year. I received 1000 euros from my region and 2119, 33 euro (Erasmus grant).

What is the student life like in Graz?

Amazing! You make friends very quickly!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Graz to other students?

Yes! It is a really nice city, not too big, not too small and with a lot of charm.

What is the food like in this country?

Nice but not very varied (soup, Viennese cutlets).

Did you have any difficult finding accommodation in Graz?

Yes, I advice you to not wait until the last moment, start looking far in advance to avoid a bad surprise!

What is the cost of living in Graz?

For a French person, very similar.

What was it like learning the language? Did you go to any courses provided by the university?

I chose to take an intensive cours at the university before starting the rest of my courses. This allowed me to improve my German but also get to know other people.

What places would you recommend for going out in Graz?

The Office pub, a very nice and friendly bar. Postgarage.

And for eating in Graz? What are your favourite places?

The Zinzendorfgasse is the street for students to eat at lunch time (Japonese restaurants, snacks, vegetarian restaurants, dishes to take away... ). Otherwise, the Goldenen Kugeln in the Heinrichstrasse, an affordable restaurant for students with a typically Austrian decor and their amazing Viennese cutlets.
