Erasmus Experience in Graz, Austria by
Why did you decide to go to Graz, Austria?
I won the scholarship... and I asked myself: "Why not going?! "
What about the scholarship? How much money did you win from it?
I received more or less 240 euros per month... for a period of time of 10 months.
How is the Campus vibe in Graz?
It is great, the Campus is filled with students who come from all the sorts of places.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Graz to other students?
Of course I would!
How do you like the national food?
Here you get much meat and fried stuff, sandwiches are common and really cheap, but the typical cuisine does not lack of more refined and very tasty dishes especially meat-based ones... and of wonderful desserts!... I didn't mention beer yet, you'll never run out of it!
How did you find an accommodation?
I found it thanks to housing boards on the internet.
How much did you pay for the rent?
A single room might cost you on average 150/270 euros.
What about your German? Did you attend some lessons at the University?
German language is not easy to pick up, especially because they sometimes use it in the university sphere, where "l hoch deutsch" is usually preferred... however the city is prepared to welcome a large number of foreign students and everyone understands English, and also many know a little of Italian!
What's the cheapest way to get to Graz from your hometown?
I guess... boarding a train from Milan, or taking a flight to Vienna and then proceeding from there with a local train... or taking a flight to Klagenfuert and then getting on a local bus...
Where would you recommend to go partying in Graz?
I recommend four streets which border the university area... do not miss the parties held in the various student halls which periodically repeat themselves (above all they represent a good occasion to get to know many new people)... I also recommend a couple of clubs along the Mur where they play live music so as in the vicinity of Jacominiplatzt... and then let's not forget about the essential PostGarage bar!
And where to eat in Graz? What about your favourite places in town?
Everywhere there are economical and very good sandwich places... otherwise you can go to typical gasthauses such as "the cock"... or if you want to truly fill up choose the Austrian food chain "3kugel"... there are also loads of small places that you can discover day by day.
What do you recommend visiting?
Go to winestrasse... then there's also something less cultural but always pleasant like any of the great spas nearby... and remember that Graz is attached to the heart of East Europe which deserves to be seen and discovered and that now is being more and more revalued thanks to its convenient prices.
