10 reasons to do your Erasmus in Granada
If you are thinking about going on Erasmus and one of your options is Granada, we are very jealous of you! Today we want to give you the reasons why you should do your Erasmus and study in Granada (and they are many), so if you are still not completely convinced of how wonderful this city is, you have no choice but to take a look at this post and judge for yourself. Let's get to it!
1. University city
If we had to find the ultimate university city, Granada would probably be one of the finalists. And we don't say so ourselves, but rather the students themselves who are taking their degrees in Granada and those who are spending a semester or two in the city thanks to Erasmus+ grants, SICUE grants and other national and international mobility programmes.
Many of them say that Granada is the perfect city to pursue your studies or part of them and highly value the quality of teaching, as Massa, who gives us a first-hand account of their Erasmus experience in Granada in this post.
2. A thousand-year history
We cannot fully understand the value of Granada as a city without knowing its role and importance in the history of Spain. The beloved city of Queen Isabella I of Castile has a lot to offer if you like history, but if you only want to understand the basics, our suggestion is that you take a tour of the city with a local guide during your first few days in Granada. Not only will you get to know the most important spots of the city to start your study period in Granada in the best way, but you will also have a better experience and cultural immersion by knowing the origins of the city.
3. Unique architecture and monuments
Although Granada is not only the Alhambra, the city is unimaginable without it. The Alhambra complex could well be considered one of the wonders of the modern world for its architectural beauty and its conservation over the centuries. Not only is it the second most visited monument in the country, after the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, but it has inspired artists and writers for generations and gives us incredible views from the city's many viewpoints. If you choose to study in Granada, you'll spend a lot of time at these viewpoints and see some of the best sunsets you've ever seen. Don't you believe us? You''ll have to see it for yourself!
4. Cultural diversity
Thanks to its past and centuries of coexistence between different cultures, in Granada you can find people from all over the world. Students, travellers, artists... everyone who travels to Granada comes back at some point. And that's just because the beauty of the city and the people with whom you share an adventure make your experience unforgettable.
If you don't speak Spanish very well, you can start improving your language skills before and also during your Erasmus adventure with a language course. From Erasmusu Education we can advise you on whatever you need to find your ideal course, so all you have to worry about is having an amazing experience.
5. Varied gastronomy
It's a fact: in Granada you will never go hungry. Not only do you have an incredible choice of restaurants and tapas bars, typical of Andalusia, but any type of cuisine you fancy can also be found here. From traditional Andalusian and Spanish cuisine, to Lebanese or Turkish cuisine, as well as other more usual ones such as Italian or Japanese, and even many vegan, vegetarian or option options restaurants. Whatever you want, you've got it!
6. Affordable prices
We know that, as a student, you probably won't have much money to spare and scholarships are sometimes not enough, but don't worry! Granada is one of the most affordable cities to go to on Erasmus in Spain, so that's definitely a plus for this city as a study destination. Rents are not too expensive (depending on what you are looking for), shopping won't cost you a fortune, and if you eat out some days you will hardly go broke thanks to the prices of the tapas. You can also get some discounts with your student card, so with Granada it's all advantages.
7. Wide range of housing
As Granada is one of the university cities in Spain par excellence, the offer of accommodation in the city is quite wide, so you are in luck! We know that the most complicated part of studying in another city apart from the paperwork is finding student accommodation, but in Granada this process can be much more bearable both for the variety of flats and for the price, which is below the average of many Spanish cities.
Moreover, on Erasmusu you not only have student flats available, but you can also contact other people and look for flatmates or roommates for flat sharing. Whatever you are looking for, you are sure to find it in Granada.
8. Excellent location
If you choose to study in Granada, you will not only have an amazing city to live in: you will also be able to explore everything around it. Maybe you already know, but Erasmus is a time to travel, and quite a lot! Make the most of your weekends and days without duties to discover everything that is close to you, because the province of Granada has it all. Do you want to go to the mountain? Sierra Nevada, one of the most important mountain ranges in Europe, is very close by, so you can make plans all year round. Do you fancy going to the beach? It's less than an hour away. Alternatively, you can always visit other cities in Andalusia and the rest of the country thanks to the bus, train and plane connections.
9. Wide range of leisure options
As we have already mentioned, Granada is a university city, so you won't miss anything during your stay in terms of entertainment and free time, whether you are a party person or you prefer a bit of peace and quiet. There are many bars and nightlife areas in the city, such as Pedro Antonio de Alarcón street (well known among Erasmus students) and its surroundings. In addition, the university organises plenty of activities, both faculty parties and external activities, excursions, trips, etc. It's impossible to get bored!
10. Nature everywhere
If you feel like disconnecting from routine and taking a break from studying, Granada is the perfect city for a complete change of scenery and a bit of peace and contact with nature. In this city you have a large number of parks and green spaces where you can stroll and play sports, such as the Alhambra Paradise Gardens and the Generalife Gardens, which have a special charm and plenty of space to get lost in, or the Federico García Lorca Park. If you prefer to spend a day out of the city, in Sierra Nevada you have many recreational areas to spend the day, hiking trails of all kinds, and you can even do winter sports during the ski season.
We hope we have given you enough reasons to choose this amazing city for your Erasmus or mobility programme and that studying in Granada will be the best decision you make in a long time.
