My experience in Genoa, Italy, by Andrea
What is life like in Genoa? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I was born in Genoa and I have to say that I reevaluated it a lot after my time on Erasmus. I came back to my city and noticed parts of it that were under my nose the whole time, but I never noticed. I would definitely recommend it for an Erasmus placement because it isn't too big or too small and there are lots of different places to see which will certainly stay with you if you visit them with other people.
What is student life like in Genoa?
I would say it's getting better. There aren't too many university nights out, but there are at least two a week. There are also the vicoli, narrow alleys in the historic centre, where you'll find students practically every night, especially Erasmus students.
How much does it cost to live in Genoa?
Prices are quite high in general.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Genoa? Do you have any advice?
The best way to find accommodation is to speak to SASS (the international student office at the uni), or do it privately, there are lots of Facebook groups. Alternatively, check out notice boards inside your department.
What's local food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Everyone who has been to Genoa has a special place in their heart for pesto and focaccia, two of many traditional foods. People generally eat well in Italy and Genoa is certainly no exception!
In your opinion, where should you visit in Genoa?
The whole of the historic centre, which will give you really interesting views. Up in the hills around the city you will find lots of castles and breathtaking views from up high. Obviously, you should also visit the coast; every small town around Genoa has something different to offer. I suggest you visit all of them and decide for yourself which one is your favourite.
And what about eating out in Genoa? What are your favourite bars?
You can find everything, from cheap pizzerias to higher-end restaurants. You can find something to eat everywhere and some places even stay open 24 hours.
What's nightlife like in Genoa? Where would you recommend going?
The historic centre, piazza della vittoria, corso italia, boccadasse, every place essentially has it's own story and a season to visit. In summer, people tend to go along the seafront, whilst in winter people gather in the vicoli.
Do you have any advice for future students coming to Genoa?
The first piece of advice I can give is to contact mobility groups such as ESN or AEGEE which are really active and help all Erasmus students out, not just those who have only just arrived.
