What the museum offers

This interesting museum is situated in Rue des Vieux-Grenadiers 7. This museum hosts over 500 years of watchmaking history into two collections: an antique collection dating from the 16th century and the Patek Phillippe collection from 1839.

This is a well-organized and carefully presented museum, which is spaced out across four floors. You will be exposed to the roots of watchmaking through a series of key events since 1500 until the present. The museum is divided into two major sections:

Antique Collection

The Antique Collection: 1500-1800, which also holds the first ever watch. This collection is a breathtaking presentation of Genevese, Swiss and European watches and enamels, which have in some way created an impact in the history of horology. The early watches are an invention of complex, engraved gold and silver mechanisms which were a symbol of luxury. Around the 17th century, enameled watches started to appear in Geneva, which involve the painting on enamel. Many include very beautiful and intricate designs which are mesmerizing to look at, for example “Amor Crowning Flora as a Bride” really caught my eye.

Patek Phillipe Collection

Patek Philippe Collection: 1839 – Present portrays a series of watches designed and crafted by Patek Phillippe. The collections include pocket watches, wristwatches and complicated pocket watches which belonged to very important people. I found many of these collections fascinating, especially the Art Deco watches which date between 1890-1940, which are a more complex collection including engravings and brooches.

Make sure you see the World Time watches dating between 1936-1963. This masterpiece was invented by the Genevan watchmaker Louis Cottler. This genius found a mechanism in 1935 that made watches indicate the local time in several cities. This watch master later created a series of universal time watches for Patek Philippe.
