What is it like to live in Gangtok? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Gangtok is a peaceful hill station in the 22nd state of India, Sikkim. Life here is slow and relaxed where people live in harmony with nature and with each other. I would recommend it as a holiday destination as it has strong cultural ties, mountaineering, treks and friendly people.
What is the student lifestyle like in Gangtok?
Gangtok isn't exactly a favoured student City with local students preferring to travel to other states or countries to study. The ones that do study here are normally locals.
How much does it cost to live in Gangtok?
Gangtok is a relatively cheap place to live and comes with many hotels, home stays and apartments.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Gangtok? Is there any advice you can give?
Not really there are multiple online sites to search places to stay at.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is a mixture of Tibetan and Nepali food with other cultures being added in as well. My favourite would be fried mono which is beef stuffed dumplings deep fried and served with a spicy chilli paste.
What places would you recommend visiting in Gangtok?
Gangtok for gastronomical adventures and Lachung for treks and a feel for the mountain life.
Is it good to eat out in Gangtok? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
The food is great out. Places like Taste of Tibet (local food), Selvis Bistro, Solpon and The Square are a few good spots.
Is the nightlife good in Gangtok? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is alright with only a few clubs as I did mention that Gangtok is a sleepy place. A good place to go would be Eros lounge for a great night of dancing.
What advice would you give future students heading to Gangtok?
Have fun and soak in all the culture and friendliness.
