What is it like to live in Florence? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Having been used to living in big, cosmopolitan cities such as London and Paris, Florence was a different experience and lifestyle. It has its positive and negative aspects, however, generally the city is welcoming, enjoyable and beautiful. The centre is a tourist hot spot because of the Renaissance architecture and galleries on offer, which means culturally, the city is always buzzing.

What is the student lifestyle like in Florence?

I am a student working in Florence, therefore I don´t lead the same student lifestyle as the others who study here. From what I've seen and heard, the student life is good here. There are plenty of cultural activities to keep one occupied and evening events organised in Italian or English.

How much does it cost to live in Florence?

Eating out is much better than buying food from the supermarket and cooking. Restaurants are generally not very expensive and same goes for drinks and aperitivo. Personally, I don´t pay anything for transport as I walk everywhere and when I need to I take a taxi occasionally - although be warned, taxis can be overpriced. Fresh food markets are very good and every Sunday there is some sort of market around the city where one can find great bargains!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Florence? Is there any advice you can give?

The best thing to do when it comes to finding accommodation is to find a few agencies online before you arrive and go to the office when you get there and tell them in person what you are looking for. Otherwise, Airbnb is also a popular website, however they sometimes charge extra fees.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Food is obviously a major bonus when living in Italy. Try to avoid the centre for the typical dishes as these are aimed at tourists and non-authentic. The most popular dish in Florence is the Bistecca Fiorentina which is a delicious T-bone steak.

I would recommend visiting Piazzale Michelangelo for stunning views of the whole city.

Piazza Santo Spirito and Piazza Strozzi for dinner and drinks.

Palazzo Pitti, Giardino di Boboli, Uffizi Gallery and Academia are obvious must-visits.

If you can manage the steps of climbing the Duomo, then do it, the views are definitely worth it.

Is it good to eat out in Florence? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Trattoria Sostanza, Tamerò, Buca Lapi, Obicà Mozarella Bar and Gusta Pizza.

Is the nightlife good in Florence? Where is good to go?

Nightclubs in Florence are not very good. However, if you want to try them yourself, go to Yab and Dolce Zucchero. Otherwise bars such as Colle Bereto are fun.

What advice would you give future students heading to Florence?

Walk around the city without a map, it's the best way to discover the architecture, pizzas and local coffee spots.
