In the district of Faro, there is a very important place for portuguese history: Fortaleza de Sagres (or Sagres Fortification, in English). It was a place to protect the seaside from invadors and it was also a navigation school, where the great navigations were planned.
Nowadays it is open for visitations (free for portuguese residents - including erasmus students - on sundays) and it is a must see!
Even if it wasn't such an important place, the scenery is beautiful. Fortaleza de Sagres is located in a cliff on the southest point of Portugal, where you can see a big horizon and a beautiful ocean landscape. It's quite windy there, but you will forget about it while admiring the place. Great nature and beauty.
Inside the Fortification you'll find cannons, a little chapel, a small museum, and of course, a great wall, where the soldiers would stay to watch the ocean. You can also see the first navigation planing and feel like Vasco da Gama, the most important navigator.
It is a very inspiring place. I loved visiting it and I'm sure you will too!
