Erasmus Experience in Exeter, United Kingdom by Maria Belen
Why did you choose to go to Exeter, United Kingdom?
It was the only option that I was given if I wanted to go on Erasmus on my second year. But I'm absolutely glad it was.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Just one term, 4 months. My university gave me 300€ per month, and another extra help from the government of 175€ per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Exeter?
Excellent. Exeter is a city filled with university and college students. The city us always crowded with young people and the atmosphere in both the daily and the night time.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Exeter to other students?
Absolutely. The university is amazing, huge and beautiful, with activities almost every day, and the city as well.
What is the food like?
English food in general is not precisely my favourite, but you can find food diversity, not much in restaurants but you can cook your own. People here are used to buy meal deals at tesco or sainsbury's on a daily basis, which I find so unhealthy and too expensive.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Exeter?
Quite a lot, yes. I couldn't afford living in university halls, so I had to find myself a private accommodation.
How much does it cost to live in Exeter?
A lot. It's pretty expensive, considering its not a big city or a popular part of the country. Rent for me is £400, which is the cheapest you can find here. Food is the most expensive thing here.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There are many courses available for everyone who has troubles with the language, but it's not so difficult, at least to me, although at first you may be a bit scared. But people are pretty comprehensive and try to help you.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Exeter from your city?
I took a flight to London and then National Express or megabus to Exeter. Great connections and not very expensive. Although you can also travel to Bristol airport, and then take a direct coach to Exeter.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Exeter?
Timepiece, Fever, Turtle bay.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Exeter?
The Chevalier Inn, Kaspa's (for dessert)
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The cathedral (£5 entry fee, although in Christmas they organise a fair and you can enter for free), the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, the Castle and the wall, Rougemont Park, and a lot of churches. Besides, you can travel to a lot of amazing places from Exeter, such as Dartmoor national park, Bristol, Cardiff, Bath, stonehenge, Exmouth, Torquay, Plymouth, etc.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Exeter in the future?
I absolutely recommend this city. People are nice and kind, the city is beautiful and full of life, the university is great. You'll always have something to do.
