Experience in Eskişehir, Turkey by Ebru
What is it like to live in Eskişehir? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Eskişehir is a city for students! You cannot think of any where else that is better for students to live because it is like the city was established just for students so, fortunately, I am studying in Eskişehir and I am happy about that.
What is student lifestyle like in Eskişehir?
You can find so many affordable places to eat on every budget. While enjoying having an open buffet breakfast until 4 p. m., you can find yourself in the night enjoying the live music at Barlar :) It is a great chance for students to have the Anadolu University Campus right in the city centre since after your classes, you can find whatever you're looking for: a place to eat? cafe?, restaurant? club? Everything is at the Üniversite Caddesi. You can understand the situation also from the street name, it is called university street. Briefly, If you are a student in Eskişehir, life is so easy and so fun.
How much does it cost to live in Eskişehir?
Of course, it depends on your life style but living in this kind of a vibrant city, you can experience everything at affordable prices, for sure. Comparing it with the bigger cities like İstanbul, you don't have to pay for transport as Anadolu University is located in Üniversite Caddesi (in the city centre), so if you can find a place in this area for accommodation, the transport is free. When you go around centre, just follow the tram ways and don't worry if you feel like you're lost, every street goes out to the main streets in some way :)
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Eskişehir? Is there any advice you can give?
So Easy. There are many options when finding an apartment rented directly from the owner, or you can search with a real estate agency. You can also find lots of furnished apartments. It is easy to find a flat in a 1+1 form. Like I said, it is city for students so they are building homes for students. If you say that you don't want a place with furniture, you can find lots of spots to buy second hand furniture.
What is the food like? What are your favorite dishes?
You can find every type of cuisine in Eskişehir but I strongly recommend that you try the traditional and popular taste of Eskişehir: Çibörek. Also, my favorite spot for desert is Mazlumlar in Haller Youth Center, you should visit there. Experiencing the authentic atmosphere of Haller Youth Center whilst trying a traditional desert, you will love the idea.
What places would you recommend visiting in Eskişehir?
Social Pub is my favourite spot. If you like listening to live music, it doesn't matter if it is in the week days or not, you can go there on any night since there is a band performance in Social Pub almost every night.
What I like the most is sitting near the Porsuk River, especially on summer nights, when every student is grabbing their drinks or ice-creams and siting near the Porsuk. You can also enjoy the atmosphere there while some of the students are playing their guitars and singing.
Is it good to eat out in Eskişehir? Can you tell us your favourite places?
You must visit Pilavcı. It is true what the writing says: "Your mother is the only rival we have" :). You can eat very tasty home made meals at very cheap prices.
Is the night life good in Eskişehir? Where is good to go out?
It is so colourful in Eskişehir. There are loads of bars, every type of pub for every taste, places with live music if you also want to chat with your friends and it is all up to you to choose. Also, if you like to dance, there are clubs like Kafe-Pi, 222 (the most popular) and so on..
What advice would you give future students heading to Eskişehir?
Don't think too much, just take your luggage and come to Eskişehir and enjoy the student life here :) but if you like the seaside, this is bad news for you because of Eskişehir is in the middle of Turkey, there is no sea in the city unfortunately but don't worry, there are lots of parks with little lakes and there is of course, The Porsuk River. If you are coming to Eskişehir in the winter, good luck with the weather since the winter here gets harsh and I hope that you can survive it without getting ill. I strongly recommend you dress up in layers because believe me, you cannot imagine the cold before experiencing it :)
